Murphy-Harpst Children's HomeMurphy Harpst is a 46 bed Behavioral Healthcare Organization designed to meet the needs of children and youth with severe emotional and/or behavioral problems. They provide residential treatment for children and youth ages 6-17 and , when appropriate, their families, who have demonstrated a need for residential treatment services at the intermediate level of care. The Murphy Home has 3 residential cottages and an educational facility. The school serves "at risk" four year olds in a preschool and child development program in cooperation with the Polk County Council for Children and Families. The Council, also working from the Murphy Campus, serves as a planning and coordinating initiative with community partners providing services to children who are "at risk". It was established in 1931 and chartered in 1935. The Harpst Campus provides residential treatment, education, therapeutic foster care and several innovative outdoor programs for emotionally and behaviorally disturbed children and youth. This campus also houses a diagnostic unit and is responsible for an active intervention program for high risk communities in its locale. It was established in 1923. These programs are under the auspices of the Women's Division of the General board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church, and are united under one Board of Directors. Today, Three members of Due West UMC are part of that board...Jack and Jane Johnston and Jackie Giles.
