Reading
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.
Think about that. Late in his life John decided to reflect on all he had seen Jesus say and do. Decades later, he still remembers intricate details of the three years he spent with Jesus. And from those memories, he wanted to tell a story. Not just “a” story, but “the” story. The Gospel Story.
But he was not simply telling a story, he was telling a story for a specific purpose. He wanted everyone who read it to believe that Jesus was the Messiah, so that people could have life. The entire reason John wrote the gospel was so that people who lived long after him, people like you and me, could enjoy eternal life.
As you read the gospel, remember his purpose!
