Great God, creator of light, we recognize our own darkness. We accept that you sent the Greatest Light into the world to illuminate our darkness. We thank you for your warm light that shines in our very souls for all that proclaim the name of Jesus. We thank you for Jesus and His birth that ushered in the kingdom of light here on earth. Help us to shine Your light to a world in darkness.

Tonight, when the sun goes down, look around your neighborhood. You’ll see beautiful lights, displays, and whimsical creations in all their dazzling beauty. People have worked hard to put these light displays together to bring joy to all who see them. Due West’s Light the Night is no exception. Kids and adults come from all over town to walk through the display and to read the words of the Christmas story. Then, on Christmas Eve, at all services, we will light candles and become mesmerized by their beautiful glow as we sing Silent Night, and remember the birth of our precious Jesus, the greatest light.
The idea of light at Christmas is not new to our generation. For years, the concept of light has had a significant spiritual meaning. God himself created the light. The people who walked in darkness waited for the light.
As you read through the verses this week, and think back to the Christmas music program, consider how even the thought of a coming Savior was a hopeful light to generations. God, who created light, allowed His own light of Christ to come into this dark world and to shine for all to see. This light has gone out through the Gospel for hundreds of years, and now lives in our very hearts. If we know Christ, we embody that Light. We are, after all, created in the very image of God.
So, may you never look at a Christmas light the same way again. When you see a beautiful warm Christmas tree with all the lights twinkling, remember that if you know Jesus you are a reflection of the Greatest Light. People see you and admire your warm glow. Therefore, let the LIGHT in you illuminate the darkness that another person is facing.
