January 2025 Newsletter

Keeping you updated as we gather, grow and go!

  • What Does It Mean to be a New Creation?

If you’re reading this, it’s already 2025. We want to wish you and your family a healthy and blessed new year . . . but more about that later.

First, we want to thank everyone that completed an Estimate of Giving card, either online or by filling out a paper card and turning it in. As of the week of Christmas, 184 families have provided us with an estimate of their giving for 2025. This will make the work of our Finance Committee more accurate and effective for the coming year. Thank you again.

Okay, so it’s a new year. What’s different?

Often, nothing at all is different, other than we tend to write the wrong year on stuff for a few months. But for many, the new year is different, or we intend for it to be different. How do we intend for it to be different? For lots of us, we want to lose that stubborn 15 pounds this year. Some of us resolve to get a better job, or to be a better husband or a better wife, or maybe to quit smoking. Many people (according to Forbes magazine) want to improve their financial situation.

So, maybe we have a new attitude going into the new year. But are we a new person, or a new creation? What is a new creation, anyway? I’ll tell you what that is by quoting one of my favorite Bible verses, 2 Corinthians 5:17 --

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

What this means to me is that I’m no longer the crummy old person that I was; I’m a new and better creation because of our Savior’s incredible grace. How does that change me? Well, I can find how this should change me by flipping over to1 Peter 2:21:

For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps.

Each of us should decide to make 2025 different by following in His steps and striving to be more like Christ, and by doing what we have been commanded to do throughout the Bible. Some of those things we are told to do are earnestly praying, regularly attending church, reading your Bible (daily, if possible), and, of course, properly stewarding your earthly gifts.

Both the Old and New Testament are clear that we should be giving a portion of our gifts to God. If you are not presently donating to God, 2025 is an opportunity to demonstrate that you are a new creation, thanks to the saving grace of Jesus Christ. If giving to a church is new to you, start small and work to make your giving a regular part of your budget. As you grow in Christ, you will very likely find that your family’s giving becomes easier and you will find joy in furthering the work of the Lord. Remember, the purpose of giving and stewardship isn’t to fund God’s church or His work (although that is normally the result). The purpose of giving is for us to make our hearts right in our relationship with God, and to demonstrate that we are aware that our purpose on Earth is to honor and glorify God.

If you are interested in reading what Jesus said about giving, I recommend that you go back and read our recent series of discussions about that. You can go to our past newsletters at Newsletter — Due West MC; go to the site, click on the month (Aug – Sept – Oct) to read what our Lord said about gifts and tithing.

    * * * * *

Please prayerfully consider where stewardship ranks among the things in your life, and remember – we don’t really own the stuff, God is just giving it to us to steward while we are here on this earth.

Actual Giving, YTD -- $744,326 ($66,174 worse than budget – we’ve slipped into a pretty big hole)

  • Rebuilding a Broken City

"Take a good look, my dear. It's an historic moment. You can tell your grandchildren about how you watched the Old South fall one night," These are the words Rhett Butler spoke to Scarlett O’Hara as they watched Atlanta burn. It would take a good decade for much of the city to be significantly rebuilt. Even today, there is a phoenix on the city seal. The phoenix is a mythical bird that is reborn from its own ashes, symbolizing the rebuilding of Atlanta. The word phoenix actually comes from a Latin word that means “rising again.”

I am one of those rare people whose family was in Atlanta not only during the Civil War, but decades before. Before Atlanta was called Atlanta and before Fulton County was called Fulton County, the Campbells were here! By the time I was born, the population of Atlanta was several hundred thousand, but had not hit a million. Today metro Atlanta claims more than six million people. (And we wonder why there is so much traffic!) But can you imagine if today, more than 150 years after the Civil War, the city was still in ruins? Can you imagine how sad it would be if the city was never rebuilt?

While it didn’t happen to us, it did happen to the city of Jerusalem. Around 587 BC the Babylonian Army came in and conquered Jerusalem. They destroyed the temple King Solomon had built. The walls around the city were knocked down and the gates were all burned. And it stayed that way for nearly 150 years! Not only were the walls broken, but the people were broken. Scripture says, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.” But then God used a man named Nehemiah to not only rebuild the wall around the city, but to help rebuild the spirits of the people as well.

Nehemiah’s experience is a remarkable story of how his life’s focus became rebuilding the city of Jerusalem. He called it a “great work.” During the next few weeks, we will be looking at the story of Nehemiah. How did rebuilding the broken city become his great work? What does his story have to say to us today? We will walk through the first six chapters of the Old Testament book of Nehemiah as we talk about “Rebuilding the Broken”. While Atlanta may have risen from the ashes, there is still much brokenness around us. How is God calling us to rebuild the broken? What is our “great work?” I hope you will join us as we talk about rebuilding

If it’s Sunday, you want to be at Due West,

    David

  • Presiding Elder to Come

As you know, in October we voted to join the Global Methodist Church with an approval rate of 96%! You may also know that the GMC is using the historic Methodist language of Presiding Elder. A presiding elder is a pastor who has some supervisory responsibilities for an area of pastors and churches. Our Presiding Elder is Rev. David Moore, pastor of Covenant Methodist Church in Smyrna. David will be with us on Sunday afternoon, February 2nd at 4:00 pm in the sanctuary of Building A. He will take a few moments to share with us what is on his heart and will be available to take questions. In addition to being our presiding elder, David is someone I am pleased to call a friend. Please mark your calendars and join us to welcome David Moore to Due West!

    New Bible Study

Have you ever wanted to read all the way through the Bible? Have you ever wanted to read all the way through the Bible in a year? Have you ever wanted to read all the way through the Bible in a year in the order in which the events occurred? I want to invite you to join me in doing so. In 2025, I’ll be reading the One Year Chronological Study Bible. It has daily readings and much in the way of study helps. It can be found on Amazon at NLT One Year Chronological Study Bible (Softcover)

We will read of Paul’s trip to Ephesus, and then read his letter to the Ephesians. Wewill read events in the four gospels one after the other, and see the unique perspective of each gospel writer. This Bible is arranged in that manner, with 365 daily readings. I would also love to gather with others and talk about the week’s reading. So Gary Pitts and I will be meeting in the Cottage each Thursday night at 7:00 pm with anyone else who wants to come. We will begin on Thursday, January 9th. The first days’ reading in the Bible is January 1st. By January 9th, we will have done nine days of reading. Even if you can’t join us on Thursday nights, feel free to get a copy of this Bible and read along! We look forward to diving into the Word of God in 2025!

    In Christ,

    David

We will continue reading Chapters 16 to 25 of "Why the Nativity" by Dr. David Jeremiah. You can catch up by watching the first 15 chapters on YouTube.

On January 21st, we will begin a new video study on "The Epic of Eden on Psalms" by Sandra L. Richter. It is an 8-week study. The Study Guide can be purchased online at Amazon, Christianbooks, or Walmart.

Biblical Citizenship with Karen McClelland and Larry Sago

    Starting January 21, 2025

This group uses a cross-generational approach with parent/grandparent and the younger generation to restore historical biblical values in our community by being the “salt & light.” We take a journey through American history to rediscover the secret sauce that produces a culture based on faith and morality so our young leaders will walk in confidence as a Christian in today’s culture. Join us at 7:00 pm every Thursday for 4 weeks in Building C, Room 232.

    Name Badges

We likely recognize one anothers’ faces at worship services or other church events, but wouldn’t it be great to put a name with that face? We can help do that by ordering, and wearing, name badges while on campus. If you are interested in ordering a name badge, please reach out directly to Denise Luders via email at dluders@duewest.org. Please do NOT order name badges individually through the newsletter or website at this time. Denise will collect names and place a bulk order which will allow us to enjoy significant cost savings per badge (individual badges are $18.50).

    Altar Flowers

Did you know we have a Flower Ministry at Due West Methodist? A floral arrangement can be purchased and displayed on the altar during Sunday morning services in honor or memory of someone you love, to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, or just because you love Jesus. An acknowledgment of the flowers will be included in the preservice slides. You will also have the option of taking home the arrangement after the service or donating it to the Flower Ministry. If you choose to donate it, we have volunteers on Monday morning that will divide the arrangement into smaller bouquets and deliver them to you as well as to church members on our prayer list. The arrangements cost $65 and are available to purchase from January – November of each year, with the exception of the first Sunday of each month. You can click here to order Altar Flowers for an upcoming Sunday. Alternatively, you can contact Denise Luders for assistance at dluders@duewest.org or call the church office at 770-427-3835.

  • The Due West Preschool Ministry will begin registration this month for children new to our school next year. Registration forms will be available on our website starting January 17th.

We look forward to welcoming you!

  • Preschool Sunday School

Memory Verse: “A friend loves you all the time.” Proverbs 17:17, NCV

Have you ever seen a bunch of preschoolers jumping in rain puddles? So many giggles! So much excitement! And do you know that feeling you get when you step outside and feel the sunshine on your face for the first time in a week? Pure happiness! Our preschoolers experience a wide range of emotions every day. They feel sad, happy, afraid, nervous, excited—sometimes all in the same hour!

As they grow, our preschoolers will experience a lot of different situations and emotions. We want children to know that Jesus is a friend that loves them at ALL times. A friend that will never leave them. That’s why, this month, we are talking about THE best friend—the One who is ALWAYS a good friend. Rain or shine, Jesus is always a good friend of mine!

    Elementary Sunday School

Resilience - Getting back up when something gets you down.

Memory Verse: “Be strong, all you who put your hope in the Lord. Never give up.” Psalm 31:24, NIRV

With every season comes new and different challenges but also the chance to experience incredible joy. Through sunshine or rain, storms, and blue skies, seasons and weather are important to growth, but not just for flowers and trees. How we respond to each season of life helps us grow in maturity and can spur us to a deeper faith in God. This is especially true when it comes to our emotions.

Just as seasons come and go, so do our emotions. And how we choose to handle those emotions can shape us and teach us a lot about how God cares for us. No matter what emotion we may be feeling or what we may face, because of Jesus, we can learn to trust that God knows how we feel. Jesus showed us how to face life with resilience, and because of it, we can trust God no matter what.

dwCrew is a specialized time of fun, learning, and service for 3rd-5th graders. We will be meeting this month on January 12th & January 26th from 12:00-1:30 pm. Lunch is $3 and check-in is just inside the blue dwKids doors.

    Wonderfully Made: Loved by God

The preteen years are tough. Changes are happening to them physically, mentally, and emotionally which makes it hard to know exactly what’s going on. Wonderfully Made provides kids ages 10–12 the opportunity to not only ask questions about growing up, but to get faith-based answers as well. This program covers physical development and spiritual connection while helping preteens establish a foundation for their life in Christ.

Wonderfully Made is a 3-day course for 5th & 6th grade students and their parents: Thursday evening (parents), Friday evening (students), all day Saturday (students in the am, all in the afternoon for lunch)

Coming February 27th - March 1st. Click the link below to register!

  • Thank you from Women's Ministry - Cookies with Santa

Thank you to all the volunteers who came out and helped make this day special for the families of the sweet children attending Cookies With Santa. We thank Naomi Ruth Sunday School class for helping to provide Walmart gift cards to the families and the Due West Choir for providing the children with Christmas gifts.

These children and their families come into the arms of our church wanting nothing more than to be loved, accepted, thought about and shown attention.

Fun! That's what the afternoon was about. It was a time to see Santa, enjoy face painting, making cards for their parents, playing some bingo, crafts, hearing the nativity story, decorating some cookies and enjoying a snack and hot cocoa.

Please pray over these sweet little ones and their families with hopes that rehabilitation and reuniting with their families will come and that they may know the love of Christ.

Coming! Mark your calendars for our Ladies Retreat here at the church on March 14th and 15th. Watch ChurchCenter for more information coming soon!

  • Calling all college students and parents of college students: The Due West College Care Ministry wants to connect with our college students both near and far. We want to pray for, encourage, equip, and connect college students into a deeper community of faith here at Due West throughout their college years. Our plan is to pray for each student, send notes of encouragement, host possible studies, and have some in-person socials throughout the year and during college breaks. If you know of a Due West college student, please email us the students’ name, college or home address, and email to: collegecare@duewest.org or sign up on the college care ministry page on the Due West website. Remember that we need the student's college address for the 2024-2025 school year. If you registered last year, please send us updated information for the 2024-2025 school year. Contact Kristin March or Brian Lewis with any questions. Help us keep our students connected to Due West as they transition from student to young adult.

  • The Congregational Care Ministry is committed to sharing the love of Christ and the love and support of our church family. We work with our Pastors to meet the needs of our congregation, especially during times of illness and loss, and to those who no longer are able to attend worship services. We walk alongside those going through hard times utilizing home and facility visits, phone calls, cards, and emails.

It is a joy to offer Holy Communion to those who cannot come to the Lord’s Table, and offer anointing with oil as a reminder that Christ is with us in body, mind, and spirit at all times. We provide Holy Communion after our services each Sunday, and we serve in the Healing Services and Longest Night Service each year.

If God is calling you to join us in this vital and rewarding ministry, please contact Lay Leader Brenda Wyatt at 770-605-3709 or email bwyatt66chs@gmail.com. This is a wonderful opportunity for couples who want to be in ministry together. We have a new training class beginning Tuesday, September 17th, at 6:30 PM. We would love to have you join our team!

Matthew 25:40 “ Truly I tell you whatever you did for one of the least of those brothers and sisters of mine you did for me.”

  • American Heritage Girls - Informational Meeting

Parents of girls ages 5-17 are invited to an informational meeting to learn more about American Heritage Girls Troop GA4224, which is chartered by Due West. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 7th, at 6:30 pm in the Children’s Assembly Room in the lower level of Building A. Girls are welcome to come meet current troop members and do some crafting while parents learn more about our troop. Our goal is to build women of integrity through faith, service, and fun. We enjoy the outdoors, work on badges, have devotionals, and serve God and our community. Our spring registration period will be open through January 31st. RSVP here for the informational meeting.  You can also learn more about American Heritage Girls (AHG) on their website. Contact us through the Find a Troop link.
