The Power of Prayer
I’m sure I’ve read it before. I’ve read the book countless times. But it is a big book and my memory is not what it should be. So it seemed brand new to me. I was reading in II Chronicles. When was the last time you said, “I’m in the mood to read II Chronicles?” But if you seek to read the bible through each year, you will on an annual basis, get to read II Chronicles. There you find the story of King Solomon. He takes over the kingdom from his father David. Not only does he inherit the job of being king, he inherits another job as well. David wanted to build a temple for God, but God said “No”. God said that Solomon would be the one to build the temple. And Solomon builds the temple. When it is done they do a big dedication for the temple. You can read about that in chapter six. Then, also in chapter six, Solomon prays a prayer of dedication. Take a few minutes to read the prayer. It was apparently a pretty good prayer.
If you don’t believe me, read the beginning of chapter seven! Take a look,
When Solomon had ended his prayer, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the Lord filled the temple. 2 The priests could not enter the house of the Lord, because the glory of the Lord filled the Lord’s house. 3 When all the people of Israel saw the fire come down and the glory of the Lord on the temple, they bowed down on the pavement with their faces to the ground, and worshiped and gave thanks to the Lord, saying, “For he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.”
Did you see that? One prayer. And what are the results? Fire comes down. The Lord’s glory fills the temple. The people are so inspired that they bow down, worship and sing praise to the Lord! I read that and thought, “I’m never praying in public again! My prayers are nothing compared to this!” John Wesley once wrote in his journal, “Have I prayed with humility, admitting my inability to pray?” I read the response to Solomon’s prayer and was more than ready to admit my inability to pray.
But then I remembered. I forget sometimes, but I remembered. My prayers are not about my ability to pray. My prayers are about my relationship with God through Christ Jesus. If your child calls you on the phone and rambles, do you say, “You are not worth listening to?” Or are you thankful to hear from your child. God wants to hear from you. God wants to hear from me. And even more importantly, we need to hear from God. Maybe you don’t pray like Solomon. I know I don’t. But I pray anyway. Because I need a connection to the Holy. Even if the glory of the Lord doesn’t come down and fill the sanctuary, the Glory of the Lord fills me. And you. Take some time. Pray. And then watch out… you never know what God might do!
If it’s Sunday, you want to be at Due West,
David

“Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above.” – James 1:17
“The church is of God and will be preserved to the end of time.” – United Methodist Baptismal Covenant
“You do not have, because you do not ask.” – James 4:2
“The gift that keeps on giving.” – Victor Talking Machines Co., 1926
“Today is a critical time for stewardship in the church.” True today, and true at nearly any time in the church’s history. We hope to challenge you to think about stewardship more as a lifestyle rather than as simply a check in the offering plate.
Our mission statement is clear. “Inviting our community to join us as we Gather Together, Grow in Jesus Christ and Go Serve.” Like every other church mission statement, chances are it lacks something: an expiration date. The church is of God and of eternity. In other words, we expect our church to be here long after our brief time on earth is over. However, our giving programs too often focus solely on the here and now, not on tomorrow.
Think for a moment about the people who preceded you in our church. If not for their vision and commitment to the future, our church probably would not exist. Now think for a moment about the people who will come after you. What will we do in the current generation to ensure that our church will be here for future generations of Christian disciples and disciple-makers? One answer is to develop an endowment and planned giving program.
With an endowment and planned giving program, Due West can send the optimistic message that we will be here tomorrow to reach new disciples, we will be here tomorrow to encourage those disciples to put their gifts to work, we will be here tomorrow to put God’s love into action, we will be here tomorrow to do our part to heal a hurting world. Gifts to endowment programs literally do “keep on giving,” leaving a legacy to our family, our friends, our church.
The leadership of Due West recently approved the creation of an endowment designed to serve the needs of our community in perpetuity. The Legacy Ministry Committee of Due West is responsible for educating leaders and members about this endowment, inspiring them to participate and distributing monies to ministry. Come join us on this incredible journey of stewardship on Sunday, May 22 when we together begin leaving a legacy for future generations. Look for more information in Insight, Facebook and on our website in the coming weeks. Thank you.

In his letter to the Galatian church, the apostle Paul says, “serve one another humbly in love.” One of the ways we do that is by serving in areas in the life of the church. In the attached form, you have a chance to let our Committee on Nominations know where you would like to serve. Please take a moment to prayerfully consider an opportunity to be in the leadership of your church. While we will do our best to place people, we obviously cannot guarantee everyone their first choice. The deadline is Friday, May 6.

Preschool Sunday School
Memory Verse: “God saw everything He had made. And it was very good.” Genesis 1:31, NIrV
Preschoolers will ask questions countless times as they get to know the world around them. It’s like they’re beginning a lifelong Scavenger Hunt. This is the perfect opportunity for us to not only tell them what they are looking at but who made it as well. That’s why we are going to add another question to their inquisitive minds. Who made everything?
Who made the red ladybug? Who made the grey rocks? The white clouds? The blue bird?
We want preschoolers to know that God made everything. We want them to think of God as they explore and get to know this wonderful, colorful world we live in. And even more, we want them to know that the same God who made everything made them and loves them.
Elementary Sunday School
Resilience - Getting back up when something gets you down.
Memory Verse: “But those who trust in the Lord will receive new strength. They will fly as high as eagles. They will run and not get tired. They will walk and not grow weak.” Isaiah 40:31, NIRV
God is strong and faithful, always working in our lives. We might get knocked down from time to time, but when we put our trust in God, we find the strength we need to get back up again. Jesus showed us how to face life with resilience. No matter what happened, Jesus relied on God to help Him accomplish the mission set before Him. Because of Jesus, we can trust God no matter what. We can bounce back from whatever knocks us down and complete the mission God has for us.

The Rainbow Thrower by Shel Silverstein
The rainbow thrower
Squints his eye
And hurls his colors
‘Cross the sky
While far beyond
Horizon’s gate
The rainbow catcher
Sits and waits
This poem reminds me of the Bible verse, Galatians 6:9, where the writer tells us “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we don’t give up”.
In the poem, the rainbow catcher knows that the beautiful colors are on the way, if he only waits for them. Serving the Lord is very often the same way. We don’t always see immediate results from our actions, but in our hearts, we know that the “rainbow thrower” has hurled the colors.
This poem also reminded me of a family (one of several that we are helping at this time) that through your continued prayers, service, and financial support we have “adopted” and are walking with. The mom is up here from Florida with four of their kids. The dad is still living and working in Florida with their fifth child. Mom works two jobs, taking the CCT bus to both of them. Their 19 year old son works to help the family as well. They have a middle schooler and two high schoolers. We met this mom at our monthly Bible study that Gina Hill and Rita Schuchardt lead at the InTown Suites. She came in late, having just gotten off the bus from work, and hurried up to us hoping to catch us before we left. She had heard about our church and all that we do there. She was determined to meet us.
If you would have asked me to place a bet as to why she was so desperate to catch us, I would have lost big. I would have bet the farm that she wanted rent assistance, or a Walmart gift card, or something of the like. I would have lost. Instead God won. She simply said that she wanted to ask us to pray for her and her family. See, she was running out of steam. She was tired. But she was not even close to quitting. She knew that God was watching over her, but she just wanted a fresh boost of prayers! Yes, we prayed with her. Yes we eased her stress by helping with a week of rent. Yes we have gotten her resources to get her 19 year old into a free GED program so he can be more successful in life. Yes, Kerri Casteel, through our Women’s Ministry program has assigned a mentor to her to help her in her walk. Yes, God won.
You see, she knew in her heart that the “rainbow thrower” had hurled those colors! She believed in her heart that she would see the beauty and experience the love. She knew this because she prayed! Thank you Due West! Y’all Rock!

As most of you know, one of the strongest ministries at Due West is our ministry to assist families dealing with Dementia. The couple who has led the ministry with love and grace over the last 12 years need the help of their church family. Please take a moment and read this letter from Sheila Welch. As you read, perhaps the Spirit will speak to you about helping.
As always, thank you for being the church,
Dr. David Campbell
Dear Due West,
For over twelve years, my husband Kim and I have been honored to lead the Dementia Ministry at Due West.
Loving through Dementia’s mission is a familiar one: To answer God’s call to love.
Specifically: To provide free help, hope, inspiration, and dementia education. To help break the crushing stigma associated with this illness. To send the message that these families are not alone. They are not forgotten.
To encourage, inspire, provide resources for, and educate other churches as they answer this same call.
Volunteers from every corner of our church have helped fulfill this mission.
Today, I am asking for your prayers and for your help. Just over a year ago, Kim was diagnosed with Parkinson’s dementia. I will continue leading for as long as Kim’s health allows. However, we need volunteer interns now. I can provide on-the-job training. It is important that you know that your leadership does not have to look like or be the same as ours. We all are different and bring different gifts to the table through our own personalities, education and resources.
Specifically, I am praying for volunteer interns in the following leadership roles:
Family Support Group Facilitator (two volunteers) - Primarily made up of adult children loving a parent through Alzheimer’s and related dementias. “How to Begin A Support Group” available at lovingthroughdementia.org.
Coordinator of Fall Care Partner Conference (two volunteers): “How to Coordinate a Conference, Workshop or Seminar” manual available at: lovingthroughdementia.org.
Loving Through Dementia Coordinator: (two volunteers) One to lead and the other to assist. Both would assist me now in my role in this blessed ministry and would continue to lead when I must step away.
Thank you all for considering and praying about these needs. From the beginning, God has led this ministry in the ways it should go. We know He is leading still.
Blessings,
Sheila Welch

Summer Singers
If it’s been years since you’ve sung in a choir, or you’ve never sung in a choir but have always wanted to, this is a great time to jump in. Our summer singers program will only rehearse for eight weeks, and then we perform on freedom Sunday. This is a great time to just come and sing for a season, and share your gift of song with your church. If you are interested, email csalazar@duewest.org.
Freedom Sunday
As we prepare to honor our veterans this coming freedom Sunday (June 26), we want to engage the congregation in two very meaningful ways. First, we need representatives (active or veteran) from EACH branch of the military to carry that branch’s flag. We need a representative at EACH service. Email csalazar@duewest.org to volunteer. Second, if you have served, or would like to recognize immediate family that have served (or are currently serving), and have ***never before had their photo in the slideshow,*** please submit a clear photo with their full name, branch and rank. Email photo submissions with details to csalazar@duewest.org by June 1.
