July 2025 Newsletter

Keeping you updated as we gather, grow and go!

There will not be a PDF version of July’s Newsletter. We had multiple repairs needed around the campus this month, and it would just not be feasible to put out a good quality version in the remaining time. I apologize for the inconvenience! - Matt Boullain

  • Another Take on the Parable of the Talents

You may recall that back in October of last year, I wrote about the Parable of the Loaned Money, also known as the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30). This is a wonderful lesson, and I tried my best to explain my layman’s understanding of it. Recently, though, I came across another good perspective on  this parable that I wanted to share.

In this passage, Jesus illustrates the concept of stewardship very well and shows us some of the key challenges of stewardship. For one, we can often see ourselves as less capable or talented, like the last servant in Jesus’ parable. This can allow us to excuse ourselves from active stewardship because we don’t think we have any gifts that can be used for God’s purpose. We see our gifts as minimal, and therefore, our responsibility to support God’s kingdom is likewise minimal.

This can be a major struggle with our view of stewardship. What are we to be good stewards of? How are we to manage our gifts? What is our responsibility? What is God really expecting of us? If we are good stewards of our money, is that enough? What about our time, talent, and relationships?

A wonderful way to start each day is to ask God one question: “What would You have me to do with everything You have entrusted to me?” Let’s break this question down by focusing on some key words:

“You” – What does God want me to do? Not what do I want to do or what do others want me to do?

“Everything” – It all belongs to God. He, as the true owner, wants us to steward everything to further His purpose for us and His kingdom.

“Entrusted” – As I have repeatedly written, we don’t own “our stuff”. We have been entrusted or appointed to steward it for a brief time on this earth. We can’t take any of it with us. All that we have and all that we have truly stewarded will be left by us when we enter our eternal home.

We should remember the answers to these questions when we consider our responsibility to be good stewards of all of our gifts during our brief time here on earth.

Remember, the purpose of giving and stewardship isn’t to fund God’s church or His work. The purpose of giving is for us to make our hearts right in our relationship with God, and to demonstrate that we are aware that our purpose on Earth is to honor and glorify Him while furthering His kingdom on earth. Please prayerfully consider where giving to God ranks among the things in your life, and remember, we are merely the stewards of our earthly possessions.

  • The Names of God

This month at Due West, we’re going to be exploring the names of God. God has many names and many titles and each one highlights another wonderful facet of His character. After spending time on the topic of distraction, it seems very fitting to focus on God’s character and how it relates to us. If you want to find out exactly which names we’ll be highlighting, you’ll need to join us in person or online–and I certainly hope you will.

As I sit with this topic of the names of God, I’m reminded of the Gaither chorus entitled, “There’s Something About That Name.” Here are the lyrics, in case you’re not familiar:

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus; there's just something about that name

Master, Savior, Jesus, like the fragrance after the rain

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, let all Heaven and earth proclaim

Kings and kingdoms will all pass away

But there's something about that name

Kings and kingdoms will all pass away

But there's something about that name

The words of the song read like a prayer–the movement from devotion, adoration and worship to a recognition that one name has stood, and will stand the test of time–the name of Jesus.

The Apostle Paul in his letter to the Romans talks about how “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (10:13) But the name of God is not some kind of magic or spell–it’s a hallmark element of the relationship God invites us to share with Him. This relationship is embodied with Jesus, and made especially present to us through God’s Spirit. This is a saving relationship, a sanctifying relationship, and a relationship filled with abundant life.

What does the name of the Lord mean to you? Is there a specific name or title of God that resonates with you, and if so, why?

My prayer for us this coming month is that we would each connect deeper with a God who calls us by name, invites us to know Him by name, and calls us to live accordingly. In Jesus’ name I pray, AMEN!

God bless you to make disciples,

    Sam Gindlesberger

  • Last month, Global Methodists across north Georgia met to have their annual conference. Each Global Methodist church is represented by their pastor(s) and lay delegate(s). This conference does include some voting and business but it is also so much more than that. Bryan Ellis, one of our lay delegates this year, provided the following brief report of his experience this year at annual conference.

It was such a pleasure and a truly encouraging experience to attend the 2025 North Georgia Annual Conference of the Global Methodist Church along with Pastor Sam Gindlesberger and fellow lay delegate, Jennifer Morrow.

I grew up attending churches that lacked denominational affiliation and have lived with an inherent bias against denominational governance.  All of the splits and schisms throughout history seemed to validate that bias.

However, I must happily confess that my experience at this conference is strong evidence to contradict my bias.  What I encountered was a large group of clergy and lay delegates whose highest collective interest appears to be bringing glory to our God rather than a focus on empowerment of people or denominational officials.

I witnessed new rules and guidelines being proposed and debated, with strong feelings on both sides of the issues.  But, at no time, did I sense personal animus or a lack of unity.  The business sessions during which voting took place were models of collegiality and respect.

Even more telling was the beauty and power of the worship sessions.  I truly enjoyed and treasure the experience of the obvious presence of God during those sessions.  I would gladly attend this conference again in the future for that purpose alone.

And yet, there was still more on offer at the North Georgia Annual Conference.  The workshop sessions I attended were very enlightening and educational.  I'd even describe one particular session I attended as truly inspiring.  There were far more workshop sessions than one person could attend, and while I am sincerely grateful for those which I attended, I must confess to mild jealousy of those who got to attend the other sessions, because the commentary I heard about all of them was just excellent!

I’m sincerely thankful for the opportunity to have attended this event.  I am closer to God for having participated in this conference, and I commend the experience to all of my fellow believers at Due West!

    Bryan Ellis, Lay Delegate

    Altar Flowers

Did you know we have a Flower Ministry at Due West Methodist? A floral arrangement can be purchased and displayed on the altar during Sunday morning services in honor or memory of someone you love, to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, or just because you love Jesus. An acknowledgment of the flowers will be included in the preservice slides. You will also have the option of taking home the arrangement after the service or donating it to the Flower Ministry. If you choose to donate it, we have volunteers on Monday morning who will divide the arrangement into smaller bouquets and deliver them to you as well as to church members on our prayer list. The arrangements cost $75 and are available to purchase from January – November of each year, with the exception of the first Sunday of each month. You can click here to order Altar Flowers for an upcoming Sunday. Alternatively, you can contact Denise Luders for assistance at dluders@duewest.org or call the church office at 770-427-3835.

  • Preschool Sunday School

I can do what Jesus says.

Memory Verse: “Be kind and loving to each other.” Ephesians 4:32, NCV

This month, we will continue to Live it Out and discover how to love like Jesus with our preschoolers. Jesus showed us how to love in many ways as He helped people, was kind to them, forgave them, and was patient and gentle toward them. Jesus was consistently showing us what love looks like.

There is another way we can learn how to love like Jesus and that is by doing what Jesus says. Jesus gave us very clear instructions on what to do, and then Jesus gave us the gift of His Holy Spirit to guide us and help us do it. That is why we want our preschoolers to learn that “I can do what Jesus says” . . . because they can! Preschoolers can do what Jesus says and show His love to everyone everywhere!

    Elementary Sunday School

Live it Out - With Jesus we can help change the world.

Memory Verse: “Our God is a God who strengthens and encourages you. May He give you the same attitude toward one another that Christ Jesus had.” Romans 15:5, NIRV

Living and loving like Jesus sounds great in theory, but may be a little challenging in practice. However, with the help of God’s Spirit, we don’t have to do it alone. When we follow Jesus, God’s Spirit transforms us, shaping us every day into who God has called us to be and how God is calling us to live. Live It Out is not JUST a theme, but a call to action. It encourages kids to actively live out their faith through their words and interactions with others. And the more we become like Jesus, the more we can make a true difference in this world and in the lives of those around us.

We will not have dwKids Sunday School on June 29th or July 6th; however, child care will be available both mornings downstairs in Building A.

    Volunteers Needed

We are currently recruiting volunteers for the 2025-2026 preschool and elementary Sunday School classes. If you would like to be a part of the ministry, please contact Alicia Iles at ailes@duewest.org

  • Youth Choir Tour in Jackson Mississippi

Our Rooted Youth Choir went to Jackson Mississippi in late May to minister with Hilltop Church and Praying Pelican Missions. Hilltop Church is an inner city church in Jackson which focuses on ministering to the broken and needy. They founded a women’s and men’s home close by which help recovering addicts and those transitioning from time behind bars. Each week this small storefront church receives up to 15,000 pounds of food from Costco, Sam's Club, and Walmart to give out to the community. Their small church with its rows of chairs on Sunday transforms into a food warehouse on Monday which the men and women from the homes work to organize each week. On Wednesday morning, there is a long line of cars starting as early as 5 in the morning to get these boxes of food. At 10 the car line comes into the little church parking lot and groups offer to pray for the passengers as they wait in line for food. Others come up to the church on foot. The food is gone in 2 short hours. The tired volunteers then clean up the church, moving pallets and mopping up bits of fruit juice to make the church spotless again. This happens every week in this beautiful church full of Christ’s love!

Our youth had the wonderful opportunity of stepping into this ministry and offering support and service to them. The week began with our attending their church service. We were all surprised as the church members started counting down the timer for the service to begin, “ 5…4…3…2…1  Cheers!” They were so ready for church and needed God’s Word and a time of worship like water in the desert. The youth were also surprised to find that the church members prayed out loud together all at the same time in what they called “fountain” prayer. One person announced what they were going to pray for, pauses, and then everyone prays at the same time. It was surprising to us, but also so faith affirming. Everyone was aware of all the prayers reaching out to God at the same time. It was beautiful.

Our youth served with wonderful attitudes giving their best effort for this church and their community. They were able to paint in the men’s home and assist the women in organizing food. They joined the long food passing line, much like our pumpkin passing lines at the Due West pumpkin patch, and made sure each box had every food group available. They prayed with the cars’ passengers and told them to come back for Hilltop’s kids camps starting soon. Additionally, the youth were tasked at making candy bundles with a hand-written scripture for 1,000 prisoners who would attend an evangelical event that Friday night. Each of us wrote many scriptures on pieces of paper as we searched the Word for the right passage(s).

The funds we raised at the Movies, Music & More event enabled our youth to go on this wonderful trip. We were also able to sponsor a lunch and prayer tent ministry called Soul Snatchers where we served grilled hotdogs, hamburgers, chips, and water to the community and offered to pray for them. The boys enthusiastically held up signs calling out to the cars passing by to come by for free lunch and free prayer! We were able to pray for many families with their children and give them a wonderful lunch. One woman cried even while she was waiting for food. She asked us to pray for her daughter who was starting to use drugs. This was the first time many of our chaperones and youth experienced ministering to the homeless.

The youth were ALSO able to sing 6 times during this special week! We went to two nursing homes, sang for the Sunday and Wednesday services at Hilltop, and sang at Soul Snatchers and at the food box event. The youth and chaperones stayed at Madison Methodist Church in their gym on air mattresses. There were two partitions to divide the big space into a girls, boys, and recreation/eating area. We learned this church had also just joined the Global Methodist denomination. Their team of volunteers provided amazing meals for us all week. They served us with passion and thoughtfulness so that we could serve the community. What a wonderful experience this trip was! It was one our youth will remember forever!!

Secondly, we are exploring how our church can reach more families in our community, both churched and unchurched, by offering a faith-based parenting workshop. We have the makings of a great committee that will be studying curriculum and designing a “road map” as to how this ministry will operate, who our target audience will be, etc. If this is something that you feel led to be involved in, please let Mark Hellman know.

  • Upcoming Estate Planning Seminar: Wills and Trusts

On Saturday, July 26th, from 2-4 pm in Room C242 your Legacy Ministry Committee will again sponsor a program for members of all ages who desire to learn more about these important estate planning documents at no costto you. Your will relates to everything God has entrusted to you, and it can be a powerful statement of your Christian generosity. Any person who has a bank account or owns a home, real estate, car, or other personal property has an estate.  Such a person should have a will.

Your last will and testament are important for the purposes of passing property on after you are gone, but there are other things that are equally important for you to know so that you can develop the most effective plan for your circumstances.

    • Wills and the probate process.

    • What happens if one passes without a will?

    • Other ways to pass property outside your will and why passing assets outside of your will is important.

    • Revocable living trusts and how they can contribute to your planning goals.

    • Reasons to periodically review and update your will or trust.

Please use this link to sign up. The class size is limited to 14 individuals.

  • A Message from Habitat for Humanity

Seeing a myriad of diverse faith organizations and companies come together for a quarter of a century to build hope through housing, is in a word, inspirational. Today, the Cobb County Habitat Interfaith Coalition is raising the walls on their 25th Habitat house that will be a home for a Cobb County Public Servant.

The future homeowner, D, is a Project Utility Manager at the Cobb County Department of Transportation, helping to ensure the county’s residents enjoy quality infrastructure. Despite a stable career and doing overtime work he enjoys, D and his wife Dreika can’t find decent, affordable housing in the county he serves. Instead, they rent a small townhome just outside of Cobb, where they battle with crowding and substandard conditions.

This year’s faith groups include 14 members: Smyrna First United Methodist Church, Bethany United Methodist Church, East Cobb Islamic Center, Islamic Center of Marietta, Temple Kol Emeth, Temple Sinai, Ahavath Achim Synagogue, St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Log Cabin Church, Covenant Church, Unity North of Atlanta Church, Macland Community Church, First Presbyterian Church of Marietta and Due West Methodist Church.

The eight corporate partners include: Pinkerton & Laws Construction of Atlanta, Atlanta West Carpets, Moore Colson, Fortune-Johnson, Dwell Design Studio, Nissan, Burke-Moore and Sentinel Lake Neighborhood.

Henry Hene, long serving Coalition Chair says, “Staying together as an extremely diverse coalition for 25 years has not always been easy, but we have remained steadfastly committed to our mission. Our motto is ‘We Build to Coexist; We Coexist to Build’. We build together for a larger purpose than our individual organizations.”

This coalition is building more than just a house. Together, we are building hope, community, a brighter future, stability, and generational wealth for this family through a safe, affordable home.

    Yours in the Mission,

    Kyle Huhtanen

    CEO & Executive Director

  • Media Team Sunday Volunteering

Hey Due West families! On Sundays, have you ever used the lyrics on the screens to follow along with worship? Or read the scripture with Pastor David? Seen the offering photos? Maybe you’ve watched the announcement videos? All of these are controlled by a Media Team volunteer back in the tech booth! We have tons of opportunities for volunteering, but our most needed position right now is ProPresenter Operator. If you have ever used something like PowerPoint, then you are immediately qualified to use ProPresenter! Matt, the Director of Media, handles all of the stressful “tech”-y bits and personally teaches you ProPresenter through shadowing and practical experience!

If you would only like to volunteer once a month, that’s perfectly fine! We are very flexible with scheduling and have positions available for every service time. If you are still hesitant to volunteer, just give it a try and volunteer for one Sunday! All you have to do is email Matt Boullain and he’ll walk you through everything!
