  • The Seven Biblical Reasons for Giving – Reason No. 2

In my recent piece on giving during a recession, I noted that there were seven Biblical reasons to give. I should have said that this was per a real Bible scholar, and not something that I discovered on my own (I am certainly no scholar, Biblical or otherwise). I also promised that I would discuss the others later.

As I wrote earlier, the first Biblical reason for giving was Evidence of our Obedience to God. Essentially, we should be following the multiple scriptures in both the Old and New Testaments that instruct us to give to God. From the early Israelites to the Gospels and to the letters of Paul, we are told to give generously in proportion to how we would like God to be generous toward us, and as a grateful response to the salvation through grace that we have been given.

The second Biblical reason for giving is that Giving Sets Our Priorities Straight.

If we look at where we spend our money, it becomes clear where our hearts are. We invest not just our time, but our money, in that thing or those things that are most important to us. It could be your nice home in the “right” neighborhood, or those elaborate furnishings. Maybe it is that high-end watch, or the fine ring on your spouse’s finger. Who doesn’t like a new luxury vehicle, or the newest 85-inch television or iPhone or gaming computer? How about a foreign vacation for the family? Who are we trying to impress? I can assure you, these things may impress our friends or colleagues, but Jesus isn’t impressed. These things are not necessarily wrong at all – unless we seek them at the expense of obeying the commands in the Bible about giving. Jesus told His followers:

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

    -- Matthew 6:19-21

This is our command to invest in the eternal. God’s Word also tells us to be heavenly-minded by setting our minds “on things above”:

Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.

    -- Colossians 3:1-4

If our priority is in the eternal and our sights are set on the life to come, that’s where an appropriate portion of our money and our time will be directed—to benefit the kingdom of God. Therefore, as we give to God and invest in His kingdom, that’s where our hearts will be fixed and focused. Giving to God prioritizes our lives and is, again, evidence of our love for Him.

Remember, the purpose of giving and stewardship isn’t to fund God’s church or His work. The purpose of giving is for us to make our hearts right in our relationship with God, and to demonstrate that we are aware that our purpose on Earth is to honor and glorify Him. Please prayerfully consider where giving to God ranks among the things in your life, and remember, we are merely the stewards of our earthly possessions.

  • Distracted?

Happy June! Can you believe that it’s June already? For some, the summer may be a slow time, but I think you will find that there are a number of ways our church, this month especially,is a hub of activity.

In the busy-ness of it all, it can be easy to get distracted (our sermon theme by the way) and miss what’s really important. One passage that highlights this well is the Great Commission, Matthew 28:18-20:

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

What a tremendous passage! This is a foundational passage, not only revealing God’s heart for missions but also this great empowerment to Christ’s followers to go and do as Christ has done.

Look at all of the wonderful elements:

    • “All authority…”

    • “Make disciples”

    • “Baptizing them in the name of the Father…”

    • “Teaching them to obey…”

    •  “I am with you always”

All of that is great, and it’s important to see it all as connected. But what can be easily missed is that there is really only one actual command in this passage. In Greek there is only one verb in the imperative (command form). Can you guess what it is?

    Make disciples.

The one thing that Jesus doesn’t want us to miss is making disciples. He wants us to know that we have the authority to do so, we have a sacrament of baptism to engage in, we have teachings for disciples to learn and obey, and we have Jesus’ presence with us. All of that is a part of one command: make disciples.

    How are you making disciples?

What things in your heart and life are distracting you from this calling?

Making disciples is not only the work of pastors and the church, it is the calling and commission of every follower of Jesus.

This month, we have two great opportunities in the life of the church–both have the potential to be disciple-making experiences.

Vacation Bible School. June 2-5, our campus will be flooded with hundreds of children from our community. We need all hands on deck. If you are able to volunteer, please sign up here: 2025 True North VBS - Due West Methodist Church

Please pray for this time that it would be a disciple making time, shaping the hearts and lives of the children for Christ.

Freedom Sunday. June 29th at 8:30 am and 11:00 am. Our Freedom Sunday worship services are a special way of honoring our veterans and their families and celebrating the freedom that we have in Christ. Please visit our website: Freedom Sunday — Due West MC to submit a photo or sign up to carry a flag. Invite your friends–especially those who are past or present service members.

I look forward to our time together this month.

God bless you to make disciples,

    Sam Gindlesberger

    Name Badges

I hope by now you are seeing more and more people wearing their Due West name badges and taking advantage of the opportunity to greet them by name! Thank you to everyone who has already ordered a name badge, and thank you for wearing it at church events! It is so helpful and allows us to connect with each other on a more personal level.

If you haven’t ordered your name badge yet, what are you waiting for? Contact Denise Luders via email at dluders@duewest.org right now! She will collect names and place a bulk order which will allow us all to enjoy a significant cost savings per badge. Individual badge orders are $18.50 each, but by placing a bulk order, we can save about $5 per badge.

    Altar Flowers

Did you know we have a Flower Ministry at Due West Methodist? A floral arrangement can be purchased and displayed on the altar during Sunday morning services in honor or memory of someone you love, to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, or just because you love Jesus. An acknowledgment of the flowers will be included in the preservice slides. You will also have the option of taking home the arrangement after the service or donating it to the Flower Ministry. If you choose to donate it, we have volunteers on Monday morning who will divide the arrangement into smaller bouquets and deliver them to you as well as to church members on our prayer list. Speaking of these volunteers, we need a few more people that can volunteer a few hours on Monday mornings. The time commitment is generally less than once per month.

The arrangements cost $75 and are available to purchase from January – November of each year, with the exception of the first Sunday of each month. You can click here to order Altar Flowers for an upcoming Sunday. Alternatively, you can contact Denise Luders for assistance at dluders@duewest.org or call the church office at 770-427-3835.

  • Preschool Sunday School

Jesus shows me how to love others.

Memory Verse: “Think and act as Jesus did.” Philippians 2:5, NIRV

What do you do when you don’t know how to do something? Do you pick up your phone and do a quick search? Or do you find someone who knows how to do it and just ask them, “Hey, can you show me how to do this?”  We all need people to show us how to do things, and when it comes to how to love others, well, there’s only One who can truly show us how—Jesus! This month, we are going to discover how to live it out and love like Jesus. No matter how young or old you are, we all need Jesus to show us how to love others. Together, let’s point preschoolers to the One who came to show them how to do the most important thing: loving others the way Jesus loves them.

    Elementary Sunday School

Live It Out - With Jesus we can help change the world.

Memory Verse: “As you deal with one another, you should think and act as Jesus did.” Philippians 2:5, NIRV

Living and loving like Jesus sounds great in theory, but may be a little hard in practice. However, with the help of God’s Spirit, we don’t have to do it alone. When we follow Jesus, God’s Spirit transforms us, shaping us every day into who God has called us to be and how God is calling us to live. “Live It Out” is not JUST a theme, but a call to action. It encourages kids to actively live out their faith through their words and interactions with others. And the more we become like Jesus, the more we can make a true difference in this world and in the lives of those around us.

We will not have dwKids Sunday School on June 29 & July 6, however, we will have childcare available for all ages downstairs in Building A.

Youth Go to Worship - June 1

    1st Sunday of each Month!

Youth will not meet for Sunday school, but will go to either the 9:45 or 11:00 am worship service on the first Sunday of every month. This is a great opportunity to fellowship with the rest of our church and to participate in communion. Come sit together! We will be at the front of the church on the right as you come in the narthex doors.

Can’t wait to see you all there!

  • Modern Worship Band Volunteers

Due West’s Modern service is currently seeking to add musicians to the band in the following roles:

    • Bass players

    • Other instrumentalists on a rotating or substitute basis

Let us know what you play! Time commitment is Sunday mornings for rehearsal and service, and whatever time you need to prepare at home for upcoming services. Email csalazar@duewest.org for more info.

Freedom Sunday is June 29th, 2025

Check out our brand new Freedom Sunday website where you can submit photos of veterans or active service men and women, volunteer to carry a flag for your branch of the military, or sign up to sing in the choir for this special service.

As we prepare to honor our veterans and celebrate God’s foundation in our country this coming Freedom Sunday, June 29th, we want to engage the congregation in three very meaningful ways.

First, if you have served, or would like to recognize immediate family that have served or are currently serving in the armed forces, we would like to include your photo in a slideshow. Submissions are due by June 10th. Simply use a cell phone to take a clear (no glare) picture of the photo you’d like to include, and submit it on our website. You can also check to see if we already have your picture included from last year.

Second, we are asking representatives—either active or veteran—from each branch of the military to carry that branch’s flag. We need a representative at each traditional service, 8:30 and 11:00 am. You may volunteer for one or both. Time commitment is only the morning of June 29th, for about an hour per service. Sign up here to secure your position. Act quickly as some branches fill up fast!

Third and finally, if you would like to be a part of making this special Sunday happen, NOW is the time to get involved. “Freedom Singers” begins rehearsal on May 7th, and will rehearse for only eight weeks! This is a great low-commitment way to get involved in the music ministry at Due West and support this celebration. Click here to let Christine know you’re coming to rehearsal. You do NOT need to know how to read music. You DO need to come with a heart of praise and a willingness to express worship through song. We welcome all voice types and all voices. No audition is required to sing in choir.

Hey Due West families! On Sundays, have you ever used the lyrics on the screens to follow along with worship? Or read the scripture with Pastor David? Seen the offering photos? Maybe you’ve watched the announcement videos? All of these are controlled by a Media Team volunteer back in the tech booth! We have tons of opportunities for volunteering, but our most needed position right now is ProPresenter Operator. If you have ever used something like PowerPoint, then you are immediately qualified to use ProPresenter! Matt, the Director of Media, handles all of the stressful “tech”-y bits and personally teaches you ProPresenter through shadowing and practical experience!

If you would only like to volunteer once a month, that’s perfectly fine! We are very flexible with scheduling and have positions available for every service time. If you are still hesitant to volunteer, just give it a try and volunteer for one Sunday! All you have to do is email Matt Boullain and he’ll walk you through everything!
