  • How Much Should I Be Giving To My Church?

Over the last few months, we have written extensively about why we are to give a part of our earnings to God. Both the Old Testament and the New Testament are clear that we are to be giving to God, and there are multiple reasons. As we said previously, the purpose of giving and stewardship isn’t to fund God’s church or His work (although that is normally the result). The purpose of giving is for us to make our hearts right in our relationship with God, and to demonstrate that we are aware that our purpose on Earth is to honor and glorify Him.

    But . . . how much?

Well, that is quite a controversial question, and one that is hotly debated to this day. It can be downright emotional, and it is a topic that rabbis, pastors, and Stewardship Chairmen alike will rarely – if ever – address directly in temple or church or in any other venue. Let’s see if we can lay out some of what the Bible says.

First of all, the Old Testament is reasonably clear about how much the Israelites were to give:

The LORD said to Moses, “Speak to the Levites and say to them: ‘When you receive from the Israelites the tithe I give you as your inheritance, you must present a tenth of that tithe as the LORD’s offering.’ “ --- Numbers 18:25-26

So, the children of Israel were to give one tenth of their produce to the Levites. The Levites were members of the same tribe as the descendants of Aaron but were not in the direct line of Aaron. They served as aides to the priests who were direct descendants of Aaron, doing things like helping to prepare the sacrifices. They took care of the temple, making repairs when needed, and served as musicians, singers and doorkeepers (much like our church staff, but without the animal sacrifice). The one-tenth figure for tithing was relatively consistent throughout the Old Testament, although there were multiple other commands for additional offerings, such as in Deuteronomy 26:12 (a separate tithe which was given during the third year of the seven-year cycle to aid the poor). Note, however, that Mosaic Law was actually quite complicated regarding the additional giving, as not all income earned in different places was to be treated the same, etc. It is so complex that even Jewish historians and scholars don’t all agree on all of it. However, the 10% essential tithe was, and has long been, regarded as the expected amount for Jews to give.

But . . . aren’t we under the New Covenant now? The New Covenant is a central concept in the New Testament, representing God's promise to forgive sin and restore communion with those who believe in Jesus Christ. Jesus is the mediator of the New Covenant, and His death and resurrection form the basis of this promise. The New Covenant replaces the Old Covenant made with ancient Israel. Does that mean that the tithe, or giving 10% to the Lord, is no longer valid? Is the 10% figure just a carryover from Jewish custom?

Maybe the Old Covenant is yesterday’s news . . . but it’s not at all simple. Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount:

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” --- Matthew 5:17

Don’t forget – we haven’t exactly set aside the Ten Commandments, have we? Hope not . . .

So, what does the New Testament say about how much we are to give to God?

Jesus spoke often about giving (for our series of discussions about what Jesus said about giving, you can go to our past newsletters at Newsletter — Due West MC; go to the site, click on the month (Aug – Sept – Oct) and read what our Lord said about gifts and tithing). However, He never said how much to give, or what percentage of our income to give.

What about Paul? The Apostle Paul wrote 13 (or maybe 14, if he wrote Hebrews) of the 27 books in the New Testament. Surely he told us how much to give . . .

No, he never told us a specific amount, but he did give us tangible guidelines.

    1. Giving is to be personal, planned, proportionate, and regular. Every Christian ought to give since generous giving is a personal response to receiving God’s grace in and through Jesus Christ. In his first letter to the church in Corinth, Paul wrote: Now about the collection for the Lord’s people: Do what I told the Galatian churches to do. On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. --- 1 Corinthians 16:1-2

    2. Giving should be generous. Generous giving is a sign of spiritual maturity and sincere love. Paul challenges the Corinthians (in his second letter) to demonstrate the sincerity of their love for their brethren by giving to meet their material needs: But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you — see that you also excel in this grace of giving. I am not commanding you, but I want to test the sincerity of your love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. --- 2 Corinthians 8:7-8

    3. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Paul does not want believers to give out of a sense of grudging obligation but proportionately, willingly, and cheerfully: Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. --- 2 Corinthians 9:6-7

What does all this mean? I take it to mean that you should give what your heart tells you to give based on the recognition and appreciation for God’s saving grace. Your giving should be planned, proportionate (based on your income), and regular. Your giving should be generous, as generous giving is a sign of spiritual maturity as well as an expression of sincere love for our Christian brethren and our Lord and Savior. Finally, you should not view giving as an obligation, like paying your bills, but your giving should be done willingly and cheerfully. Perhaps you should strive to get to the point where you can give 10%, or maybe you are able to give even more generously. Whatever you decide, try to follow Paul’s teachings on giving.

Remember, the purpose of giving and stewardship isn’t to fund God’s church or His work. The purpose of giving is for us to make our hearts right in our relationship with God, and to demonstrate that we are aware that our purpose on Earth is to honor and glorify Him. Please prayerfully consider where stewardship ranks among the things in your life, and remember – we don’t really own the stuff, God is just giving it to us to steward while we are here on this earth.

  • Blessed: Lent 2025

March 5th is Ash Wednesday, it is the first day of the season of Lent. As most of you know, Lent consists of the forty days (not counting Sundays) prior to Easter. It is a time that recalls the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness in preparation for His public ministry. For us, it is a time we focus on the life and death of Jesus as we prepare to celebrate His resurrection on Easter Sunday. Each year, we have a particular focus during the season of Lent. This year we will be focusing on the Beatitudes. They come at the very beginning of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount.

Each Beatitude begins with the same phrase, “Blessed are…” What does it mean to be blessed? Have you thought about that? As a rule, our culture focuses on happiness, not blessedness. Have you ever wondered about the difference? I believe there is a difference. Happiness usually happens from the outside in, while blessedness occurs from the inside out. During Lent, we are going to be talking about what it means to live life from the inside out!

Each Sunday, our sermon will focus on one or two of the Beatitudes. We’ll see that we are not blessed by what we do on the outside, but who we are on the inside. I hope you will be with us as we journey through Lent together. As we prepare our hearts for the season, take a moment and prayerfully read the scripture.

    Matthew 5

When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. Then He began to speak, and taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

If it’s Sunday, you want to be at Due West,

  • Ash Wednesday Service

    Wednesday, March 5, 2025

As we do each year, we will begin the season of Lent with our Ash Wednesday service. This service, to be held at 6:00 pm on March 5th in the Building A Sanctuary, walks us through why we observe Lent. As always, we will receive communion together. Then, we will place the shape of a cross of ashes on each forehead with the words, "From dust you have come and to dust you will return. Repent and believe the gospel." These historic words remind each of us not only of our mortality but of the promise of eternal life that comes through the gospel of Jesus Christ. We hope you will join us.

    Thank You Due West!

The church staff would like to express their gratitude to the congregation for the donations made to the Staff Loving Offering at the end of 2024. We are each thankful for your generosity and blessed to serve this church and our community!

    DIRECTORY – PART 2

What is the Church Directory? Years ago, it was a printed booklet with photographs and contact information for the church members. Some of the information would likely be out of date before it even went to print. Today, church members have access to a digital Directory on the Church Center app, and you have the ability to update your personal information, add a photo of yourself, and add a photo of your household family members or pets. Photos are so helpful in identifying and learning the names of our brothers and sisters in Christ!

As a recap from the February newsletter article, once you have joined the church, you will receive an electronic invitation to join the directory. Please accept this invitation and set up your profile. You will have the option to choose how much information you want to include in the Directory. I’m looking forward to seeing all of your smiling faces in the Due West Directory!

    Step-by-Step Instructions:

    • Download the Church Center app on your phone

    • On the Home page, select the three dots in the bottom right corner above the word “More”

    • Select “Directory”

    • Your profile can be found by selecting the circle in the top right corner.

    • Select “My profile & settings”. Here you can update your preferences for the Directory.

If you have questions or need further assistance with the Directory or Church Center, please contact Denise Luders at dluders@duewest.org.

    Name Badges

I hope by now you are seeing more and more people wearing their new Due West name badges and taking advantage of the opportunity to greet them by name! Thank you to everyone who has already ordered a name badge, and thank you for wearing it at church events! It is so helpful and allows us to connect with each other on a personal level.

If you haven’t ordered your name badge yet, what are you waiting for? Contact Denise Luders via email at dluders@duewest.org right now! She will collect names and place a bulk order which will allow us all to enjoy a significant cost savings per badge. Individual badge orders are $18.50 each, but by placing a bulk order, we can save about $5 per badge.

    Altar Flowers

Did you know we have a Flower Ministry at Due West Methodist? A floral arrangement can be purchased and displayed on the altar during Sunday morning services in honor or memory of someone you love, to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, or just because you love Jesus. An acknowledgment of the flowers will be included in the preservice slides. You will also have the option of taking home the arrangement after the service or donating it to the Flower Ministry. If you choose to donate it, we have volunteers on Monday morning that will divide the arrangement into smaller bouquets and deliver them to you as well as to church members on our prayer list. Speaking of these volunteers, we need a few more people that can volunteer a few hours on Monday mornings. The time commitment is generally less than once per month.

The arrangements cost $65 and are available to purchase from January – November of each year, with the exception of the first Sunday of each month. You can click here to order Altar Flowers for an upcoming Sunday. Alternatively, you can contact Denise Luders for assistance at dluders@duewest.org or call the church office at 770-427-3835.

  • Preschool Sunday School

    Jesus can do anything.

Memory Verse: “And the power of the Lord was with Jesus.” Luke 5:17, NIV

One common phrase we hear children repeat is, “Watch this!” They want us to watch their spins and cartwheels, their dance routines, and what their toys can do. It’s fun to pretend to be amazed and say, “Wow,” no matter what it is.

This month, we are teaching our preschoolers to watch the One who can do anything. The One who has shown that the power of the Lord is with Him. Who is this One? Jesus, of course! Yes, this month is all about Jesus and how Jesus can do anything!

    Elementary Sunday School

Cooperation - Working together to do more than you can do alone.

Memory Verse: “Two people are better than one. They can help each other in everything they do.” Ecclesiastes 4:9, NIRV

Cooperation isn’t always something that may happen naturally, but it is something that is near and dear to God’s heart. Since the beginning of creation we see how God created us to be in community with one another. Cooperation is a spiritual concept that originates with God, and throughout the Bible, we see how God brought people together to accomplish God’s plan for the world. When we work together, we reflect Jesus to others, and our love for one another can point people to Him as we explore what God wants us to do together.

dwCrew is a specialized time of fun, learning, and service for 3rd-5th graders. We will be meeting this month on March 2nd and March 16th on campus from 12:00-1:30 pm. Lunch is $3 and check-in is just inside the blue dwKids doors.

Thank you Letter from Carolyn Glaze, Homeless Liaison Coordinator, Cobb County School District

Dear Mark and Due West Family,

As I write this, the number of students we are serving this school year continues to rise, and knowing your commitment to supporting our program truly gives our weary hearts hope. Your kindness and generosity continue to provide food, transportation assistance, and more for our families. We are deeply grateful.

Perhaps even more inspirational and impactful is that we are close to collaborating with community resources for the fourth Homeless 2 Home Resource Fair. (King Springs Baptist Church on 2/28/25 from 9-2) Due West dreamed of a one-stop "shop" to pour into and provide tangible resources and assistance for families that would lead them towards stability and the ability to be housed. Your ambitious idea has taken hold and spread to impact even more families and students. After the events, some of our families state, "even if we can't get housed, you have shown us people care and given us hope to keep going."

I will never be able to express how moved we continue to be by your work alongside us. Words will never adequately describe how much we appreciate your hearts, hopefulness, and support.

    Many Blessings,

    Carolyn Glaze

    GriefShare - Comforting Others

After the funeral, when the cards and flowers have stopped coming, most of the people around you return to their normal lives. But your grief continues and you may feel alone. Often friends and family want to help, but don't know how. That's the reason for GriefShare. Our group is led by caring people who have experienced grief and have successfully rebuilt their lives. We understand how you feel because we have been in the same place. We will walk with you on the long path through grief toward healing and restored hope for the future.GriefShare is a nationwide network committed to biblical concepts for healing from your grief. • Media Team Sunday Volunteering

Hey Due West family! On Sundays, have you ever used the lyrics on the screens to follow along with worship? Or read the scripture with Pastor David? Seen the offering photos? Maybe you’ve watched the announcement videos? All of these are controlled by a Media Team volunteer back in the tech booth! We have tons of opportunities for volunteering, but our most needed position right now is ProPresenter Operator. If you have ever used something like PowerPoint, then you are immediately qualified to use ProPresenter! Matt, the Director of Media, handles all of the stressful “tech”-y bits and personally teaches you ProPresenter through shadowing and practical experience!

If you would only like to volunteer once a month, that’s perfectly fine! We are very flexible with scheduling and have positions available for every service time. If you are still hesitant to volunteer, just give it a try and volunteer for one Sunday! All you have to do is email Matt Boullain and he’ll walk you through everything!
