  • Recessions and Stewardship – What is a Christian to Do?

For the last several months, it has been almost impossible to watch a business show or read a business publication and not see dire warnings of an imminent recession. Sensationalism? Perhaps. But, if a recession does hit our economy later this year, how should that impact our stewardship? Let’s talk about that.

Whenever there's a crisis that causes a sharp downfall in our economy, is it really wise – or required of us – to give? Certainly, God knows when we don’t have much money and He wants us to be wise with what we have, right? Besides, if God owns it all . . . why does He need our money?

The answer is . . . He doesn’t. We don’t give out of God’s need for anything. We give out of our needs.

During His time on this earth, Jesus talked more about money than Hell. That tells us it’s an issue that’s pretty important to Him. But it’s not because He cares about or has need of money; it’s because He knows how important it tends to be to us. Jesus said the greatest commandment was to love God with all one’s heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37). It follows, then, that it means with our money, too, especially if it occupies (or owns) much of our hearts.

There are many teachings in Scripture to give sacrificially – not just of our time and abilities, but of our money, too. And in the middle of crises everywhere might be the best time of all to consider giving more. Of all the reasons Scripture gives us to part with what’s closest to our hearts, there are seven biblical reasons to give – especially now. I’ll talk about one of them now, and I promise to discuss the others later.

Biblical Reason to Give, No. 1 – Giving Is Evidence of Our Obedience to God

The founder of Protestantism, Martin Luther, believed every Christian needed two conversions, one for his soul and one for his pocketbook. It’s pretty easy to say “I believe in God” and even “I’ll follow You, Jesus.” But when we give, as Scripture instructs, and it’s sacrificial (giving until it hurts), then our heart is involved. That’s an obedient follower . . . one who is willing to put his money where he says his heart is.

How is giving an act of obedience? In the Old Testament, God told the Israelites to give a tenth of what they owned to the Lord for the support of the priesthood. Under the New Covenant, Jesus instructed His followers to give generously in proportion to how we would like God to be generous toward us – see Luke 6:38.

Jesus also wants us to give as a grateful response to what we’ve been given. When we have been given the gift of salvation, haven’t we been given everything? In that regard, Jesus didn’t teach us to give just a tenth . . . He taught us to give more than that. Giving sacrificially to Jesus – our time, our talents, and our treasure – is evidence of not just our obedience, but of our love for Him.

Nowhere in the Bible is it suggested that we should only give when times are good or when our bank account is full. Remember from our article last month that Paul said in his first letter to the Corinthians that we should set aside a sum of money for later giving, which will allow us to continue our stewardship even in tough financial times.

Now about the collection for the Lord’s people: Do what I told the Galatian churches to do. On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made. --- 1 Corinthians 16:1-2

So, yes, we should continue to give even during recessions, and Paul tells us to plan ahead for lean times by putting aside some money for later giving.

Remember, the purpose of giving and stewardship isn’t to fund God’s church or His work. The purpose of giving is for us to make our hearts in proper posture regarding our relationship with God, and to demonstrate that we are aware that our purpose on Earth is to honor and glorify Him. Please prayerfully consider where giving to God ranks among the things in your life, and remember, we are merely the stewards of our earthly possessions.

  • The Message of The Empty Tomb

As we begin the month of April, we are still in the season of Lent. We will finish our sermon series on the Beatitudes. We will celebrate Palm Sunday, and we will remember the events of Holy Week. And then we will celebrate the resurrection of our Lord!

You know the story. Here it is in Matthew’s words, from chapter 8, vs. 1-10:

After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; He has risen, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay. Then go quickly and tell His disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see Him.’ Now I have told you.” So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell His disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” He said. They came to Him, clasped His feet and worshiped Him.  Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

The Empty Tomb is worth celebrating!

The Empty Tomb reminds us that our God can do anything.

The Empty Tomb reminds us that death does not have the final word.

The Empty Tomb reminds us that “nothing can separate us from the love of God.”

The Empty Tomb reminds us that we are covered in the grace of God.

The Empty Tomb reminds us that we are sons and daughters of God.

The Empty Tomb reminds us that Jesus is both our Savior and our Lord.

The Empty Tomb reminds us that Jesus the man was also fully God.

The Empty Tomb reminds us that we are now and always Easter People.

Thank God for The Empty Tomb!

If it’s Sunday, you want to be at Due West,

    David

  • Maundy Thursday Seder Meal

This year for Holy week we will be hosting this very special service–The Seder Meal.

    What is it?

The Seder meal is a special meal that the children of Israel were commanded by God to consume each year at the time of Passover. It was intended for a very specific and gravely important purpose: To remind future generations of the descendants of Israel that God had kept His promises and rescued them from bondage in Egypt.

And every year since, for well over 3,000 years, religious Jews have commemorated the Passover by partaking in the Seder meal. Each element of the Seder meal has specific meaning and significance to Jewish people, and it’s consumed in a very specific order and with specific types of foods to represent the plight of the Jewish people and the way that God has sustained them.

Even if you've never participated in a Seder meal, you’re probably familiar with the most famous time that the Seder meal was celebrated. That particular celebration of Seder is known as the Last Supper, when Jesus had His final meal with His disciples before being crucified the following day.

    What Can I Expect?

On Maundy Thursday, which is Thursday, April 17th at 6:00 pm, we will join together in the Family Life Center for this special meal, which will be a guided experience designed to commemorate the suffering and deliverance of the children of Israel. Just like a Jewish family, we will have a full meal along with the symbolic elements of the Seder meal. Dinner will be provided. We anticipate this event to be approximately 2hrs in length.

    Menu:

In addition to the symbolic Seder meal, a Jewish inspired meal will be provided.

    Where and When?

Thursday April 17th at 6PM in the Family Life Center (Building B)

Childcare: Children’s Area, lower level of Building A (Enter through Blue DWkids double doors).

    Childcare Considerations:

Individual badge orders are $18.50 each, but by placing a bulk order, we can save about $5 per badge.

    Altar Flowers

Did you know we have a Flower Ministry at Due West Methodist? A floral arrangement can be purchased and displayed on the altar during Sunday morning services in honor or memory of someone you love, to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, or just because you love Jesus. An acknowledgment of the flowers will be included in the preservice slides. You will also have the option of taking home the arrangement after the service or donating it to the Flower Ministry. If you choose to donate it, we have volunteers on Monday morning that will divide the arrangement into smaller bouquets and deliver them to you as well as to church members on our prayer list. Speaking of these volunteers, we need a few more people that can volunteer a few hours on Monday mornings. The time commitment is generally less than once per month.

The arrangements cost $65 and are available to purchase from January – November of each year, with the exception of the first Sunday of each month. You can click here to order Altar Flowers for an upcoming Sunday. Alternatively, you can contact Denise Luders for assistance at dluders@duewest.org or call the church office at 770-427-3835.

  • Preschool Sunday School

    Jesus is Alive!

Memory Verse: “I am alive forever and ever!” Revelation 1:18, NIV

What would you call a happy day? Maybe a day with no traffic, or a day when your boss gives you an unexpected bonus. How about the day you got married, or the day a child was born? All of these are happy days, but this month, we’re talking with preschoolers about days that are happy because Jesus is alive. Easter is the happiest of happy days, and every day can be a happy day because Jesus is alive. What an awesome privilege we have to share the good news with preschoolers that Jesus is alive!

    Elementary Sunday School

Hope - Believing that something good can come out of something bad.

Memory Verse: “In this world you will have trouble. But be encouraged! I have won the battle over the world.” John 16:33B, NIRV

Life can be complicated. In fact, Jesus told His disciples that we would have trouble in this world (John 16:33b). Sometimes, we may not understand why something happens the way it does. Yet, in spite of the things that go wrong or the things we don’t understand, we can have hope that God knows what’s best and is working for our good. Because of that, we can trust God no matter what as we begin to explore why the story of Jesus is good news for everyone.

    dwKids Offerings Easter Sunday

We will not have traditional dwKids programming on Easter Sunday so that families can worship together. Childcare will be available downstairs in Building A during the 9:45 & 11:15 services for birth-Kindergarten. Please reach out to Alicia Iles with any questions.

dwCrew is a specialized time of fun, learning, and service for 3rd-5th graders. We will be meeting this month on April 27th from 12:00-1:30 pm. Lunch is $3 and check-in is just inside the blue dwKids doors.

The Tuesday Women's Bible Study will begin studying the video series, "The Power of Jesus' Name" by Tony Evans on April 15th at 9:30 am in Room 219 in Building C. The book can be purchased on Amazon.com or Christianbooks.com. All women are welcome.

  • The Congregational Care Ministry is committed to sharing the love of Christ by loving and supporting our church family. We work with our Pastors to meet the needs of our congregation, especially during times of illness and loss, and to those who no longer can attend worship services. We walk alongside those going through hard times utilizing home and facility visits, phone calls, cards, and emails.

It is a joy to offer Holy Communion to those who cannot come to the Lord’s Table and offer anointing with oil as a reminder that Christ is always with us in body, mind, and spirit. We provide Holy Communion after our services each Sunday and serve in the Healing Services and Longest Night Service each year.

Our Ministry is ready and waiting to be there for you, and we assure you of complete confidentiality. To be assigned a CCM, please get in touch with Brenda Wyatt, Lay Leader, at bwyatt66chs@gmail.com or 770-605-3709.

Matthew 25:40: “Truly I tell you whatever you did for one of the least of those brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

  • Media Team Sunday Volunteering

Hey Due West family! On Sundays, have you ever used the lyrics on the screens to follow along with worship? Or read the scripture with Pastor David? Seen the offering photos? Maybe you’ve watched the announcement videos? All of these are controlled by a Media Team volunteer back in the tech booth! We have tons of opportunities for volunteering, but our most needed position right now is ProPresenter Operator. If you have ever used something like PowerPoint, then you are immediately qualified to use ProPresenter! Matt, the Director of Media, handles all of the stressful “tech”-y bits and personally teaches you ProPresenter through shadowing and practical experience!

If you would only like to volunteer once a month, that’s perfectly fine! We are very flexible with scheduling and have positions available for every service time. If you are still hesitant to volunteer, just give it a try and volunteer for one Sunday! All you have to do is email Matt Boullain and he’ll walk you through everything!

Can I help out with any of the Easter services or events?

Absolutely! Volunteers are the most important part for making any event successful, and we appreciate any helping hands available. If you are interested in helping with a specific event or service aspect, please check out the list below:
