November 2024 Newsletter

Keeping you updated as we gather, grow and go!

  • What Are My Contributions Really Used For?

In the past three Due West monthly newsletters, we have tried to explain some of the “why” of stewardship from a Biblical perspective (“What Did Jesus Say About Stewardship?,” Parts 1, 2, and 3). This month, we’re going to try to address a common question: what are my contributions really used for?

Our focus this month will be Due West Methodist’s physical property. Our spiritual properties – our acts to bring others into a relationship with Jesus Christ – will be a focus of a later newsletter. A substantial part of your contributions go towards operating, maintaining, and improving our physical property. Our Board of Trustees does an incredible job overseeing and maintaining all the facilities and equipment on a very limited (almost a “shoestring”) budget. Here’s what we maintain:

The church property is a total of 21.3 acres, including parking lots, green spaces, playgrounds, pavilion, and our retention pond. The church facilities total around 83,988 square feet:

    • 43,008 sq ft in North Campus (Building A)

    • 26,000 sq ft in South Campus (Building C)

    • 12,680 sq ft in the Family Life Center (Building B)

    • 800 sq ft in the Cottage

    • 1,500 sq ft in the Scout Hut

    These buildings contain:

    • 50 Exterior doors

    • 177 Exterior windows

    • 61 Commodes/urinals

    • 67 Sinks

    • 3 Showers

    • 2 Sets of washer/dryer

    • 1 Elevator

    • 2 Ice machines

    • 3 Freezers

    • 5 Refrigerators

    • 1 Walk-in refrigerator

    • 5 Ovens/stoves

    • 2 Food warmers

    • 1 Stove top

    • 1 Banner maker

    • 1 Laminator

    • 4 Copiers

    • 10 Water fountains

    • 35 Landline telephones

    • 52 Wi-Fi access points

    • 7 Data switches

    • 10 Hot water heaters

    • 25 Laptop computers

    • 20 Televisions

    • 2 Boilers

    • 9 HVAC units in South Campus

    • 5 HVAC units in the Family Life Center

    • 12 HVAC units in the North Campus

This list does not include a vast amount of video and sound equipment, lighting equipment, or musical instruments (we have at least 5 pianos). Also, we’re not talking about the electricity, natural gas, water, and sewage needed to keep the 84,000 square feet comfortable for our congregation, employees, volunteers, and others. Not surprisingly, the total cost for utilities goes up every year.

The above list is, admittedly, all “stuff”, and stuff does not equal God’s Church. But we believe that all this stuff enables us to carry out our mission to truly be God’s Church, spreading love and the message of salvation to our community and to the world at large. Your stewardship enables all of this.

    *

Please prayerfully consider where stewardship ranks among the things in your life, and remember – we don’t really own the stuff, God is just giving it to us to steward while we are here on this earth.

    *

November is the month when we will emphasize Stewardship. All during the month, you will be encouraged to complete an “Estimate of Giving” card for the coming calendar year. The cards will be included in the Sunday morning bulletins, and will also be available online. Your Estimate of Giving is completely confidential, seen only by you and the Due West Contributions Specialist. The estimates will be totaled, and this figure will be shared with the Due West Finance Committee to assist with constructing the next annual budget for our Church. If your circumstances change during the year, just contact our Contributions Specialist and let her know of the change in your estimate.

Consecration Sunday is on November 24th this year, and we will stress the importance of individual stewardship. Hopefully, you can complete your Estimate of Giving card and place it in the offering plate (or complete it online) by that date. However, we will be encouraging you to participate and will continue accepting the cards through the end of 2024.

  • For this I’m thankful…

Counting your blessings is always a good practice. But especially this time of year, it is worth the time to put some on paper and share them. Each year, I try to share some of the things I’m thankful for. Some things are always on the list, and some things are new…

    • A wife who loves me, even though I don’t deserve it.

    • Our grown children and our grandchildren. Especially our grandchildren!

    • The opportunity to serve with faithful followers of Jesus

    • Chick-fil-A

    • Grandchildren

    • Friends who make me laugh…

    • Time each day to read my bible and pray

    • The opportunity to work with an incredible church staff

    • Have I mentioned the grandchildren?

    • Beautiful fall days in the mountains

    • A Savior who showed His love for me on the cross…

This is a good time to mention that I’m grateful that our Staff Parish Relations Committee and Administrative Board have voted to grant me a Sabbatical next year. I will preach the second Sunday of May and will then be off until the end of July. This will be my first Sabbatical in nearly 40 years of ministry! I look forward to it and am grateful for it! You will be hearing more about this in months to come, but know I am thankful!

Those are just a few of the blessings for which I’m thankful. Some are on the list every year, some are unique this year. I know you have your own list. Make sure, as we approach Thanksgiving, you take time to thank God.

If it’s Sunday, you want to be at Due West,

    Name Badges

We likely recognize one anothers’ faces at worship services or other church events, but wouldn’t it be great to put a name with that face? We can help do that by ordering, and wearing, name badges while on campus. If you are interested in ordering a name badge, please reach out directly to Denise Luders via email at dluders@duewest.org. Please do NOT order name badges individually through the newsletter or website at this time. Denise will collect names and place a bulk order which will allow us to enjoy significant cost savings per badge (individual badges are $18.50).

    Altar Flowers

Did you know we have a Flower Ministry at Due West Methodist? A floral arrangement can be purchased and displayed on the altar during Sunday morning services in honor or memory of someone you love, to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, or just because you love Jesus. An acknowledgment of the flowers will be included in the preservice slides. You will also have the option of taking home the arrangement after the service or donating it to the Flower Ministry. If you choose to donate it, we have volunteers on Monday morning that will divide the arrangement into smaller bouquets and deliver them to you as well as to church members on our prayer list. The arrangements cost $65 and are available to purchase from January – November of each year, with the exception of the first Sunday of each month. You can click here to order Altar Flowers for an upcoming Sunday. Alternatively, you can contact Denise Luders for assistance at dluders@duewest.org or call the church office at 770-427-3835.

  • Preschool Sunday School

Memory Verse: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart.” Proverbs 3:5, NIV

Puzzles are a lot of fun. Who doesn’t love a good peg puzzle? The cow goes in the cow shape. The pig goes in the pig shape. Easy, peasy! But as we get older, puzzles can become a lot more difficult, and it can be hard to know where each piece goes.

We all face difficult circumstances that are way bigger than what we can handle. It’s in those times that God wants us to trust Him with all our hearts and say, “God’s got it!”

We don’t have to have all the pieces or know where they all go. All we need to know is that God sees the big picture and God’s got it. Our job is to trust God and take it one piece at a time. So, whether it’s needing help with a big job, knowing which way to go, not having what we need, or talking to God about anything…God can handle it, because God’s got it!

Generosity - Making someone’s day by giving something away

Memory Verse: “Every good and perfect gift is from God.” James 1:17A, NIRV

Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35, NIrV) However, sometimes generosity doesn’t come naturally to us. We want the newest and best things, or we want everyone to notice what we have. When we really enjoy the things we have, sometimes that makes it harder for us to be willing to share with others. However, with the help of God’s spirit, we can learn that HOW we give is more important than even WHAT we give. It’s about our hearts. God showed us the ultimate example of generosity by sending Jesus. This month, we’ll take a look at how we can respond by being generous to others.

  • Calling all college students and parents of college students: The Due West College Care Ministry wants to connect with our college students both near and far. We want to pray for, encourage, equip, and connect college students into a deeper community of faith here at Due West throughout their college years. Our plan is to pray for each student, send notes of encouragement, host possible studies, and have some in-person socials throughout the year and during college breaks. If you know of a Due West college student, please email us the students’ name, college or home address, and email to: collegecare@duewest.org or sign up on the college care ministry page on the Due West website. Remember that we need the student's college address for the 2024-2025 school year. If you registered last year, please send us updated information for the 2024-2025 school year. Contact Kristin March or Brian Lewis with any questions. Help us keep our students connected to Due West as they transition from student to young adult.

  • The Congregational Care Ministry is committed to sharing the love of Christ and the love and support of our church family. We work with our Pastors to meet the needs of our congregation, especially during times of illness and loss, and to those who no longer are able to attend worship services. We walk alongside those going through hard times utilizing home and facility visits, phone calls, cards, and emails.

It is a joy to offer Holy Communion to those who cannot come to the Lord’s Table, and offer anointing with oil as a reminder that Christ is with us in body, mind, and spirit at all times. We provide Holy Communion after our services each Sunday, and we serve in the Healing Services and Longest Night Service each year.

If God is calling you to join us in this vital and rewarding ministry, please contact Lay Leader Brenda Wyatt at 770-605-3709 or email bwyatt66chs@gmail.com. This is a wonderful opportunity for couples who want to be in ministry together. We have a new training class beginning Tuesday, September 17th, at 6:30 PM. We would love to have you join our team!

    GriefShare - Comforting Others

After the funeral, when the cards and flowers have stopped coming, most of the people around you return to their normal lives. But your grief continues and you may feel alone. Often friends and family want to help, but don't know how. That's the reason for GriefShare. Our group is led by caring people who have experienced grief and have successfully rebuilt their lives. We understand how you feel because we have been in the same place. We will walk with you on the long path through grief toward healing and restored hope for the future.

GriefShare is a nationwide network committed to biblical concepts for healing from your grief. To learn more visit the GriefShare website at www.griefshare.org.

  • Sponsor a Wreath to Support American Heritage Girls Troop GA4224

Join the American Heritage Girls (AHG) Troop GA4224 (chartered by Due West Methodist Church) in supporting Wreaths Across America (WAA) and raising funds for our troop ministry. It is the mission of Wreaths Across America to remember the fallen, honor those who serve, and teach the next generation the value of freedom. You can sponsor a wreath through WAA, and a portion of those funds goes to support our AHG troop's ministry of building women of integrity. Our girls are volunteering with WAA again this year to place a wreath on each veteran's grave at Marietta National Cemetery this December. Come visit our table set up in the lobby on Sunday, Nov 3rd and Sunday, Nov 10th, after service to meet our troop and sponsor a wreath.
