What Did Jesus Say About Stewardship?: Part 3
Jesus spoke frequently about stewardship. In the last two months, we have been discussing some of what Jesus said about stewardship.
If you recall, two months ago we wrote about the Parable of the Unjust Steward (Luke 16:1-13), a somewhat complicated story that has a simple but powerful ending in verse 13: “No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” Then, last month, we wrote about Jesus’ teaching about (among other things) stewardship in the most famous sermon ever preached, The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew, chapters 5 – 7). Jesus specifically addressed the relationship between Christians and their material things in Matthew 6:19-21:
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
This month, let’s move on to a later part of the wonderful book of Matthew, and consider the Parable of the Loaned Money, also known as the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30). There’s a lot to unpack here, so let’s get to it!
From my very, very layman’s reading, there are four main lessons that the Parable of the Talents can teach us about our work, our success, and our wealth.
In this parable, a wealthy man traveling into a far country is entrusting his wealth to three men. They become stewards of the wealthy man’s money. One steward receives five talents. Another receives two talents. A third receives one talent. Today, we don’t know exactly how much a talent was, but it is thought to be a significant amount of money. The man that was given five talents “put his money to work and gained five more.” The man that received two talents also doubled the amount of talents that he’d been given. The man that was entrusted with one talent dug a hole and hid his master’s money.
When the wealthy man returned, he met with the stewards to receive their reports. To the first two stewards that had doubled the talents entrusted to them, the master said to each “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” However, to the third steward who had received one talent, the angry master blasted him by saying, “You wicked, lazy servant! So, you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest . . . throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
So, what are the main lessons that this parable taught?
1. God created us to work. We don’t have to wait very long to see this in the Bible; in Genesis, God put Adam in the Garden of Eden to work and take care of it (Genesis 2:15). As Christians, we have a mission that our Lord expects us to accomplish here and now by using our God-given talents to glorify God and to further His kingdom.
2. The amounts given were based on each steward’s ability; none was given more than they could handle. The first two understood the spirit and letter of instruction and the character of their lord and worked hard to gain a profit. Sadly, fear and mistrust of his lord motivated the third steward. He buried the money in the earth and returned the original amount. The profitable stewards are praised, given increased responsibilities, and invited to enter into the joy of their lord. The untrusting steward is scolded, rejected, and punished. This teaches us that we may be given much to do by our Lord, but we will never be given more than we can handle.
3. This parable teaches us that everything belongs to the Master, and we work for the Master, not for our own benefit. We should not maximize the use of our individual talents for our own selfish purposes, but to honor God. Because of the curse of sin, our work will be difficult, but we should feel satisfaction and joy from doing our best with what God has given us.
4. Finally, this parable teaches that we will be held accountable for our actions. This parable is about how we use our work and talent to fulfill our earthly callings. The unfaithful steward didn’t so much waste the master’s money – as he wasted an opportunity. As a result, he was judged wicked and lazy. We are responsible for what we do for God with all we have been given, and one day we will be held accountable.
*
Please prayerfully consider where stewardship ranks among the things in your life, and remember – we don’t really own the stuff; God is just giving it to us to steward while we are here on this earth.

Spirit and Truth Conference: November 8th and 9th at Macland Community Church
You might wonder, “Why are we advertising something at another church in our newsletter?” And that is a great question. Let me give you a two part answer!
First of all, we are one of the co-sponsors of this event. When my friend, Lee Stevenson (one of the pastors at Macland), mentioned that he was looking for churches to join in helping with this event I immediately said, “We’re in!” I am familiar with the ministry of Spirit and Truth. They work closely with United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. More than thirty years ago, I was earning my doctorate there. I have continued to support the seminary for decades. I am a big fan of this ministry. They do kingdom work, strengthening local churches. That is why I was so eager, when Lee asked, for us to be a part of this weekend. Since we are one of the sponsoring churches, I want us to have a good turnout.
But there is another reason, a much more important reason. I believe this will be a powerful weekend for all who attend. Spirit and Truth weekends focus on four areas: Building a Foundation of Prayer (Making prayer the starting place for all of life); Cooperating with the Holy Spirit (Learning to hear God’s voice); Everyday Evangelism (Learning to share your faith right where you live, work and play); Becoming a Disciple-Maker (Mobilizing every member to participate in the Great Commission). Here is a testimony from someone who hosted a weekend…
“The Spirit & Truth weekend provided our church with a powerful opportunity to experience God’s presence and to receive training to become more effective witnesses for Jesus. Through the teaching, practical application, worship, and prayer, all who attended were blessed and left the weekend with a deeper love for Jesus and a greater passion for sharing the gospel. If you are considering hosting a weekend with Spirit & Truth, I wholeheartedly encourage you to do so. God has truly called and gifted the Spirit & Truth team, and you and the congregation you serve will be blessed by having them come. The weekend our church hosted was one of the best experiences of my pastoral ministry, and I want you and your church to share that same experience!”
Doesn’t that sound like something that produces fruit for the Kingdom of God? Doesn’t it sound like something that would not only make a powerful impact at Due West, but that it would spill over into our community? I committed us to being a part of this because I believe it will make a difference in our lives, our congregation and our community. I sure hope to see you there!
If it’s Sunday, you want to be at Due West, but if it’s November 8th and 9th, Due West wants to be at the Spirit and Truth Conference!

To our Due West family,
Marian and I cannot fully express our gratitude for the overwhelming outpouring of love, support, and encouragement we've received as we prepare to welcome our daughter, Rhodes, in just a few short weeks. What makes Due West truly special is the heart and spirit of this incredible community. It's not just a church; it's a family, one that continually surrounds us with love, lifts us up in prayer, and walks with us through every season of life. We feel abundantly blessed to be a part of such a caring and faithful congregation. Your kindness and generosity have deeply touched us, and we are beyond grateful to call Due West our home. Thank you for being part of this journey with us—we look forward to the joy that lies ahead, knowing we are supported by such an amazing community.
Thank you,
Wes and Marian Anderson

Firearm Safety Training
October 11th, 6:00 - 8:00 pm and October 20th, 5:00 - 7:00 pm
A member of our church, Ray Yeager, has offered to provide firearm safety, storage, handling, use and law instruction at no charge to our congregation. The training will be presented in two, 2-hour sessions on campus. These sessions will take place on Friday, October 11th from 6:00 - 8:00 pm and Sunday, October 20th from 5:00 - 7:00 pm in the Family Life Center (Building B).
The classes are open to everyone aged 12 and older. The first class will cover firearm safety, storage, handling, and use, while the second will primarily cover firearm law. Time will be allotted for questions and answers. Each class is standalone, and you’re not required to attend one to attend the other. IMPORTANT NOTE: No weapons or ammunition should be brought to the classes. Attendance will require signing a liability release and all materials will be provided by the instructor. Contact Mark Hellman for more information.
Due West Football and Fellowship
Mark your calendars and drop in on Saturday, October 5th, 2-5pm in the Youth Center to watch the big game with us! We will have snacks and watch whatever big game is playing this weekend. All are welcome!
Poinsettia Volunteers Needed!
Do you have 2 hours you could give during November 25-27th to help beautify our sanctuaries for Christmas? We need volunteers to help transport poinsettias from a local garden center to Due West’s sanctuaries the week before Advent (Thanksgiving week). Poinsettias will be available for sale this year from November 1-17th. If you are interested in helping transport plants, please contact Millie Skinner at mskinner@duewest.org. Thank you!
Light the Night Workdays
Due West Families! It's almost time for the large activity field to be magically transformed into the Christmas wonderland that is Light the Night! The hard-working elves that spend countless hours working to ensure that this magic happens need some help. They are recruiting a new elf team! The following dates have been designated as Churchwide Light The Night Workdays. These are days where the team needs more helping hands than usual. Please mark your calendars to come out and help on one or all three of these dates:
Saturday, October 12th from 3:00 - 6:00 pm. We will be moving pallets and wooden structures. Pickup trucks and flat trailers will be helpful. Click here to volunteer.
Sunday, October 20th from 2:00 - 5:00 pm. We will hang lights on the fence surrounding the field, on the trees surrounding the field, and decorate the pavilion. Click here to volunteer.
Sunday, November 3rd from 2:00 - 6:00 pm. We will be assembling the wooden structures ie: Big Chicken, Gingerbread House, Lighthouse, etc. Cordless drills will be helpful. Click here to volunteer.
Thank you in advance for signing up to come help make this another great Christmas gift to our community!
Name Badges
As we are in a season of starting fresh here at Due West Methodist Church, it seems like a great time for us to learn the names of fellow members of DWMC while we gather together. We likely recognize each other's faces at worship services or other church events, but wouldn’t it be great to put a name with that face? We can help do that by ordering, and wearing, name badges while on campus. If you are interested in ordering a name badge, please reach out directly to Denise Luders via email at dluders@duewest.org. Please do NOT order name badges individually through the newsletter or website at this time. Denise will collect names and place a bulk order which will allow us to enjoy significant cost savings per badge (individual badges are $18.50). We will notify all who order what the revised price is prior to finalizing the order.
Altar Flowers
Did you know we have a Flower Ministry at Due West Methodist? A floral arrangement can be purchased and displayed on the altar during Sunday morning services in honor or memory of someone you love, to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, or just because you love Jesus. An acknowledgment of the flowers will be included in the preservice slides. You will also have the option of taking home the bouquet after the service or donating it to the Flower Ministry. If you choose to donate it, we have volunteers on Monday morning that will divide the arrangement into smaller bouquets and deliver them to you and other church members on our prayer list. The arrangements cost $65 and are available to purchase from January – November of each year, with the exception of the first Sunday of each month. You will find the link to order Altar Flowers here. Alternatively, you can contact Denise Luders for assistance at dluders@duewest.org or call the church office at 770-427-3835.

Preschool Sunday School
Memory Verse: “God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9, NLT
If you’ve ever been near a playground when an airplane flies by, you know the sound of the airplane is quickly followed by the sound of kids shouting with excitement! Their innate sense of wonder is immediately turned up as they ask questions like: “Where do you think that plane is going?” “How big is that plane?” “How can it fly so high in the sky?”
Today, our preschoolers will go to places like school, daycare, church, and grandparents’ houses. We know God has plans for each of them, and as they grow, they will go to even more places that might be even further away. We want to make sure that wherever they go, they can look to God with a trusting heart and say, “Let’s fly!” because they know God is always with them.
Elementary Sunday School
Self-Control - Choosing to do what’s best even when you don’t want to.
Memory Verse: “God’s power has given us everything we need to lead a Godly life.” 2 Peter 1:3A, NIRV
There are a lot of choices that we need to make in life. Some of those choices can help us grow and shape us positively. Others can pull us in different directions, leaving us struggling to figure out which choice is best. What do we do when we’re confronted with all of these choices? Do we rush ahead? Or do we pause and let God lead us toward the best way to act? Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit. It’s one of the ways we can tell that God is transforming our lives and that we’re growing in our faith. Thankfully, we don’t have to find self-control on our own. When we follow Jesus, God’s Spirit is with us and helps us make the wisest choice.
3rd Grade Bibles:
Each year, we present Bibles to our 3rd graders as a gift from our church. This is a way we help mark a milestone in your child’s spiritual growth as they celebrate being old enough to begin to study God’s word for themselves. If you have a 4th grader who did not receive their Bible last year, we would love for them to join us for this event as well!
Bibles will be given on Sunday, October 20th, during the 11:00 service. Kids and their parents are encouraged to sit in the reserved pews in front of the sanctuary at the start of the service.
dwCrew
dwCrew is a specialized time of fun, learning, and service for 3rd-5th graders. We will be meeting this month on October 6th & 20th from 12:00-1:30 pm. Lunch is $3 and check-in is just inside the blue dwKids doors.
Trunk-or-Treat and Candy Donations

The Congregational Care Ministry is committed to sharing the love of Christ and the love and support of our church family. We work with our Pastors to meet the needs of our congregation, especially during times of illness and loss, and to those who no longer are able to attend worship services. We walk alongside those going through hard times utilizing home and facility visits, phone calls, cards, and emails.
It is a joy to offer Holy Communion to those who cannot come to the Lord’s Table, and offer anointing with oil as a reminder that Christ is with us in body, mind, and spirit at all times. We provide Holy Communion after our services each Sunday, and we serve in the Healing Services and Longest Night Service each year.
If God is calling you to join us in this vital and rewarding ministry, please contact Lay Leader Brenda Wyatt at 770-605-3709 or email bwyatt66chs@gmail.com. This is a wonderful opportunity for couples who want to be in ministry together. We have a new training class beginning Tuesday, September 17th, at 6:30 PM. We would love to have you join our team!
Matthew 25:40 “ Truly I tell you whatever you did for one of the least of those brothers and sisters of mine you did for me.”
