  • Recessions and Stewardship – What is a Christian to Do?

As I am writing this, we have just passed April 15th, traditionally “tax day” in the United States, when individual tax returns or extensions are due to the government. In Georgia and several other states, returns are due this year on May 1st due to hardships caused by Hurricane Helene back in October. So, if you haven’t filed or extended yet . . .

Paying taxes is something that almost everyone struggles with, and Christians are no exception.  Parting with one’s hard-earned money is bad enough, but we often think that our taxes are squandered by an uncaring bureaucracy or spent on things to which we object.  What do we do about that rotten situation?  Well, the Apostle Paul tells us in his letter to the Romans:

For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.

Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing.

Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

    --- Romans 13:4-7

Okay – so it is our duty to pay our taxes.  But the government gives vast amounts of money to the poor, the hungry, the aged . . . these are things that the Bible tells us to do. We might be tempted to think that, well, the government takes care of these needy folks, so my tax payment is basically my tithe, and I don’t need to give to my church. The Bible answers this question clearly in this wonderful story in Matthew, wherein the Pharisees have plotted to trap Jesus with His own words.

“Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?”

But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me?  Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought Him a denarius, and He asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?”

“Caesar’s,” they replied. Then He said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

When they heard this, they were amazed. So they left Him and went away.

    --- Matthew 22:17-22

There’s a lot to unpack in this passage.  First of all, I smile every time I come across this story wherein Jesus turns the tables on the Pharisees, and they slink away – priceless.  Next, though, we are again clearly told that we are to pay the taxes that we owe (“give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s”). The next part, though, tells us that we are also to give to God what is God’s through tithing, or being a good steward. This command holds even when taxes hit our bank accounts hard. Remember what Paul told us in his first letter to the Christians in Corinth:

Now about the collection for the Lord’s people: Do what I told the Galatian churches to do. On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made.

     --- 1 Corinthians 16:1-2

That is, you should set aside some funds for giving to God, knowing that you will have taxes (and a lot of other stuff) to pay. So, when April 15th (May 1st this year) rolls around, you should not have to say to yourself “Gotta pay those taxes now, I’ll take care of God next month.”

Remember, the purpose of giving and stewardship isn’t to fund God’s church or His work. The purpose of giving is for us to make our hearts right in our relationship with God, and to demonstrate that we are aware that our purpose on Earth is to honor and glorify Him. Please prayerfully consider where giving to God ranks among the things in your life, and remember, we are merely the stewards of our earthly possessions.

  • Living in Light of Easter

The month of May is upon us! With it brings several notable things:

    • Our senior Pastor David Campbell will be beginning his well deserved Sabbatical this month

    • Mother’s Day (May 11th)!

    • The school year ends this month.

For many of us, this will be a very full and busy time. Here’s what I’ve found: In all the things going on it can be easy to get distracted. Even though we just celebrated Easter and a deeply meaningful Holy Week, it can be easy to disengage.

I’m reminded of this passage of scripture, John 21:20-22.

20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray You?”) 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”

22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.”

The context here matters. Peter has, as predicted, denied Jesus three times and following the resurrection has just been reinstated by Jesus. This reinstatement (John 21:15-19) was painful and humbling. Jesus indicated the kind of death that Peter would ultimately die.

It’s interesting to me, the next thing out of Peter’s mouth is “Lord, what about him?”

Jesus gives Peter rare and prophetic insight into his future– granted it is sobering but who else in the scripture gets this kind of revelation? Peter’s response tries to divert the conversation away.  Does this hit home to you? How often do we hear from the Lord or have a mountain top sort of experience only to lose focus on something or someone else?

I’m convinced that the work of the enemy in our lives is often distraction. How can I get these people to focus on something, anything, other than what is truly important?

I love how Jesus brings the conversation right back on target, “[W]hat is that to you? You must follow me.” This is true for each of us. These are Jesus' words to us as well! That’s my prayer for us this month–in all that is going on we would not miss following Jesus and that for every time we might be tempted to wander, we would hear His call, “You must follow me.”

In the end, Peter did just that, he followed Jesus to the very end and I believe the same will be true for you and me.

I look forward to our time together this month.

God bless you to follow Him,

    Sam Gindlesberger

Due West will host an Emmaus Community Informational Meeting Sunday, May 4th, in the Family Life Center - Building B from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. The Emmaus Community offers 3 different programs designed as “experiences of Christian spiritual renewal and formation” including: Walk to Emmaus, Chrysalis (for youth), and Face-to-Face. As a church, we are working toward building a strong community of people who have experienced these programs and participated in the spiritual renewal they offer. We believe that these programs both benefit people as individuals and us as a whole church.

Whether you are just curious or have attended an Emmaus program before, we would love to have you join us!

If you are a voting member of our Administrative Board, we will have a called charge conference at 4pm on Sunday, May 18th in the choir room. The purpose is to formally approve our officers and budget.

    Name Badges

I hope by now you are seeing more and more people wearing their new Due West name badges and taking advantage of the opportunity to greet them by name! Thank you to everyone who has already ordered a name badge, and thank you for wearing it at church events! It is so helpful and allows us to connect with each other on a more personal level.

If you haven’t ordered your name badge yet, what are you waiting for? Contact Denise Luders via email at dluders@duewest.org right now! She will collect names and place a bulk order which will allow us all to enjoy a significant cost savings per badge. Individual badge orders are $18.50 each, but by placing a bulk order, we can save about $5 per badge.

    Altar Flowers

Did you know we have a Flower Ministry at Due West Methodist? A floral arrangement can be purchased and displayed on the altar during Sunday morning services in honor or memory of someone you love, to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, or just because you love Jesus. An acknowledgment of the flowers will be included in the preservice slides. You will also have the option of taking home the arrangement after the service or donating it to the Flower Ministry. If you choose to donate it, we have volunteers on Monday morning that will divide the arrangement into smaller bouquets and deliver them to you as well as to church members on our prayer list. Speaking of these volunteers, we need a few more people that can volunteer a few hours on Monday mornings. The time commitment is generally less than once per month.

The arrangements cost $65 and are available to purchase from January – November of each year, with the exception of the first Sunday of each month. You can click here to order Altar Flowers for an upcoming Sunday. Alternatively, you can contact Denise Luders for assistance at dluders@duewest.org or call the church office at 770-427-3835.

  • Prayer Requests

During the past two months, we have been learning about the electronic Directory that is available to us on the Church Center app. I hope you have taken a moment to update your profile and add a picture of yourself and your family! If you haven’t had a chance to do that yet, there is no time like the present! In this article, we are highlighting PRAYER REQUESTS. This resource is available to you on the Home page. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

    • Submit a Prayer Request - From the Home page, choose Prayer Requests. At the top of this page, you will see a blue button that says “Let us know how we can pray for you." Use this to submit a prayer request to the pastors. Complete a few questions and click “submit.”

  • Preschool Sunday School

Memory Verse: “I know that God helps me.” Psalm 54:4, NIrV

There was a time when learning how to tie our shoes was a big thing. Walking into a new preschool class was a big thing. And sleeping in our own bedroom by ourselves, that was a really big thing—like SO BIG! And now that we’re all grown up, the big things keep coming.

God is going to give our preschoolers big things to do. God is going to give them little things to do. And whether it’s a big thing or a little thing, we want our preschoolers to know that they have the Lord our God to help them. God helps me do big things!

Initiative - Seeing what needs to be done and doing it.

Memory Verse: “None of you should look out just for your own good. Each of you should also look out for the good of others.” Philippians 2:4, NIrV

Getting started can sometimes seem like the hardest part of meeting a need. But it actually starts before then. First, we have to see the needs around us. Initiative isn’t just some practical principle; it’s really a spiritual principle that starts with God. God took initiative on our behalf by seeing that our relationship was broken and needed to be fixed. So God sent Jesus to make it right. And because we are made in God’s image, we are wired to be able to take initiative and get things done too.

Freedom Sunday is June 29th, 2025

Check out our brand new Freedom Sunday website! Duewest.org/freedom-sunday where you can submit photos of veterans or active service men and women, volunteer to carry a flag for your branch of the military, or sign up to sing in the choir for this special service.

As we prepare to honor our veterans and celebrate God’s foundation in our country this coming Freedom Sunday, June 29th, we want to engage the congregation in three very meaningful ways.

First, if you have served, or would like to recognize immediate family that have served or are currently serving in the armed forces, we would like to include your photo in a slideshow. Submissions are due by June 10th. Simply use a cell phone to take a clear (no glare) picture of the photo you’d like to include, and submit it on our website duewest.org/freedom-sunday. On the website, you can also check to see if we already have your picture included from last year.

Second, we are asking representatives—either active or veteran—from each branch of the military to carry that branch’s flag. We need a representative at each traditional service, 8:30 and 11:00 am. You may volunteer for one or both. Time commitment is only the morning of June 29th, for about an hour per service. Go to duewest.org/freedom-sunday to secure your position. Act quickly as some branches fill up fast!

Third and finally, if you would like to be a part of making this special Sunday happen, NOW is the time to get involved. “Freedom Singers” begins rehearsal on May 7th, and will rehearse for only eight weeks! This is a great low-commitment way to get involved in the music at Due West and support this celebration. Go to duewest.org/freedom-sunday to let Christine know you’re coming to rehearsal. You do NOT need to know how to read music. You DO need to come with a heart of praise and a willingness to express worship through song. We welcome all voice types and all voices. No audition is required to sing in choir.

Our Ministry is ready and waiting to be there for you, and we assure you of complete confidentiality. To be assigned a CCM, please get in touch with Brenda Wyatt, Lay Leader, at bwyatt66chs@gmail.com or 770-605-3709.

Matthew 25:40: “Truly I tell you whatever you did for one of the least of those brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

  • Media Team Sunday Volunteering

Hey Due West family! On Sundays, have you ever used the lyrics on the screens to follow along with worship? Or read the scripture with Pastor David? Seen the offering photos? Maybe you’ve watched the announcement videos? All of these are controlled by a Media Team volunteer back in the tech booth! We have tons of opportunities for volunteering, but our most needed position right now is ProPresenter Operator. If you have ever used something like PowerPoint, then you are immediately qualified to use ProPresenter! Matt, the Director of Media, handles all of the stressful “tech”-y bits and personally teaches you ProPresenter through shadowing and practical experience!

If you would only like to volunteer once a month, that’s perfectly fine! We are very flexible with scheduling and have positions available for every service time. If you are still hesitant to volunteer, just give it a try and volunteer for one Sunday! All you have to do is email Matt Boullain and he’ll walk you through everything!
