What Did Jesus Say About Stewardship?: Part 2
Last month, this space started discussing some of what Jesus said about stewardship. If you recall, we wrote about the Parable of the Unjust Steward (Luke 16:1-13), a somewhat complicated story that has a simple but powerful ending in verse 13: “No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”
What else did Jesus say about stewardship? Jesus taught about money and stewardship more than almost any other subject during His earthly ministry, so there are lots of examples in the New Testament. Keep reading!
Let’s move right to what is probably the most famous sermon ever preached: The Sermon on the Mount. This event happened relatively early in Jesus’ ministry, after His baptism by John, the temptation in the desert and His early preaching in Galilee. Jesus opens with the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12), moves on to a discussion of Salt and Light (Matthew 5:13-16), and then to Jesus’ Reinterpretation of the Old Covenants, wherein He advises followers to show kindness, turn the other cheek, and love their enemies (Matthew 5:17-48).
In the next chapter, Jesus discusses some of the things that Christians should be doing regularly – giving to the needy, praying and how to pray (the Lord’s Prayer is found in Matthew 6:9-15), fasting (remember Pastor David’s “Holy Habits”?), and finally to stewardship; this is how every Christian should think about the material things that God has blessed us with:
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.
20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
And finally, just as at the end of the previous parable in Luke 16:
24 No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”
This entire sermon is dynamite, and if you haven’t read it in a while, I encourage you to do so today. It’s not long, it’s straight forward, and it is excellent teaching from our Lord and Savior. The Sermon on the Mount is covered in Matthew, Chapters 5 – 7.
Please prayerfully consider where stewardship ranks among the priorities in your life, and remember – we don’t really own the stuff, God is just giving it to us to steward while we are here on this earth.

“Don’t Miss” Sundays in September
Every Sunday we worship the Lord together is a great day! But, we have two Sundays in September that will be extra special. On September 15th, we will have our annual, “Morning of Worship Through Song”. Our music ministry leads us in all services. Each service will be different and each service filled with praise! Elsewhere in the newsletter you can see more of what to expect.
The other day I want to lift up to you is Sunday, September 29th. Dr. Robert Haynes, from the John Wesley Institute will preach in all three services that morning. Dr. Haynes is an author, speaker, pastor and teacher. In addition to his work with the John Wesley Institute, he also works with World Methodist Evangelism. He has a Bachelor of Science from The University of South Alabama, an M.A. in Biblical and Theological Studies from the University of Mobile and a Ph. D. from Durham University in Durham England. He is a senior John Wesley Fellow, Senior Harry Denman Fellow and Visiting Fellow at St. John’s College, Durham University.
On Sunday afternoon, Dr. Haynes will speak on the topic, “HIStory: God’s Grace Illuminated through the Wesleyan Tradition.” This will be in the sanctuary of Building A from 3:00 – 5:00 pm. It is my goal for this to be the beginning of an annual tradition where we bring in scholars to speak with us about how we live as followers of Jesus in the tradition of John Wesley. It will help us understand who we are as Methodists. And to top off the day, there will be a pumpkin truck to unload!
I hope you will come and join us for these special Sundays. But don’t forget that each one is special.
If it’s Sunday, you want to be at Due West,
David

Poinsettia Volunteers Needed!
Do you have 2 hours you could give during November 25-27th to help beautify our sanctuaries for Christmas? We need volunteers to help transport poinsettias from a local garden center to Due West’s sanctuaries the week before Advent (Thanksgiving week). Poinsettias will be available for sale this year from November 1-17th. If you are interested in helping transport plants, please contact Millie Skinner at mskinner@duewest.org. Thank you!
Name Badges
As we are in a season of starting fresh here at Due West Methodist Church, it seems like a great time for us to learn the names of fellow members of DWMC while we gather together. We likely recognize each other's faces at worship services or other church events, but wouldn’t it be great to put a name with that face? We can help do that by ordering, and wearing, name badges while on campus. If you are interested in ordering a name badge, please reach out directly to Denise Luders via email at dluders@duewest.org. Please do NOT order name badges individually through the newsletter or website at this time. Denise will collect names and place a bulk order which will allow us to enjoy significant cost savings per badge (individual badges are $18.50). We will notify all who order what the revised price is prior to finalizing the order.
Altar Flowers
Did you know we have a Flower Ministry at Due West Methodist? A floral arrangement can be purchased and displayed on the altar during Sunday morning services in honor or memory of someone you love, to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, or just because you love Jesus. An acknowledgment of the flowers will be included in the preservice slides. You will also have the option of taking home the bouquet after the service or donating it to the Flower Ministry. If you choose to donate it, we have volunteers on Monday morning that will divide the arrangement into smaller bouquets and deliver them to you and other church members on our prayer list. The arrangements cost $65 and are available to purchase from January – November of each year, with the exception of the first Sunday of each month. You will find the link to order Altar Flowers here. Alternatively, you can contact Denise Luders for assistance at dluders@duewest.org or call the church office at 770-427-3835.

Preschool Sunday School
Memory Verse: “You are the light of the world.” Matthew 5:14, NIrV
In 1967, a new toy was introduced to the world, and on the box were these words:
Create Beautiful Pictures With…Light.
It was the LiteBrite®! The LiteBrite was an instant hit and has remained such a favorite for all these years that families are still having fun making pictures with light.
This month, we’re talking about a different kind of bright light. We’re talking about THE light that God sent into the world to shine bright for all the world to see. And THIS light has a name. His name is Jesus! Each time we choose to love like Jesus, we become a bright light. Just like each LiteBrite peg lights up to make a picture, each and every act of love is a bright light that makes a beautiful picture for the world to see Jesus.
Elementary Sunday School
Compassion - Caring enough to do something about someone else’s needs.
Memory Verse: “Let your light shine so others can see it. Then they will see the good things you do. And they will bring glory to your Father who is in Heaven.” Matthew 5:16, NIrV
Think back to a time when someone made time for you. Maybe that looked like caring for you when you were sick, or teaching you how to tie your shoe, making food for you, or teaching you how to read or learn a new skill. No matter what it is, when people make time for us, it can bring us joy. It’s like a light shining on a dark day. Caring for one another isn’t always the easy thing to do, but it certainly is what Jesus asks of us. When Jesus gave the command in Matthew 5 to let our light shine, it wasn’t just to bring joy into each other’s lives, but also to bring glory to God. We are reflections of Who God is, and as we “Live Bright” this month, we’ll discover exactly how we can shine God’s light.

Way Maker Donations
Way Maker celebrated our 3rd birthday in July. We are so thankful to Due West and the congregation for having confidence in the Center and our mission, supporting us as Way Maker's anchor church along with providing the space we occupy. Without our church, we couldn't have opened the doors. As some of you know, due to the inability to receive grants and other opportunities while being under the church umbrella, Way Maker became its own 501c3 non-profit. With this being said, when supporting the Center checks should be made out to Way Maker and not Due West Methodist Church. Or, you can visit our website at waymaker.center and click the button to donate. This will also help the Center to keep up with our individual donors as well. We do provide donor statements through Way Maker at the end of the year for your taxes. We thank each and every one of you for your support in every area of the Center!

Did You Know…
…that Due West’s Endowment supports Labor Day?
Each September, we celebrate Labor Day as a time to recognize and honor the economic and social contributions of workers. This month, take a minute to consider the economic and social contributions our church has made to the community. Show your support by volunteering for the next church project, donating monies to specific mission ministries that support local community outreach efforts, or contributing to our endowment by designating areas of need that fit your passion. For more information about supporting the future of our church’s ministries via our endowment, visit our webpage at duewest.org/legacy or contact Bill Coffeen, Legacy Chair at 770-757-8147. Support the labors of our church!

The Congregational Care Ministry is committed to sharing the love of Christ and the love and support of our church family. We work with our Pastors to meet the needs of our congregation, especially during times of illness and loss, and to those who no longer are able to attend worship services. We walk alongside those going through hard times utilizing home and facility visits, phone calls, cards, and emails.
It is a joy to offer Holy Communion to those who cannot come to the Lord’s Table, and offer anointing with oil as a reminder that Christ is with us in body, mind, and spirit at all times. We provide Holy Communion after our services each Sunday, and we serve in the Healing Services and Longest Night Service each year.
If God is calling you to join us in this vital and rewarding ministry, please contact Lay Leader Brenda Wyatt at 770-605-3709 or email bwyatt66chs@gmail.com. This is a wonderful opportunity for couples who want to be in ministry together. We have a new training class beginning Tuesday, September 17th, at 6:30 PM. We would love to have you join our team!
Matthew 25:40 “ Truly I tell you whatever you did for one of the least of those brothers and sisters of mine you did for me.”
